• Thrilling Farnborough Airshow opening event highlights speed, performance and star
power
Farnborough, UK, July 14, 2008 – Bombardier Learjet pilots and Formula One racing star
Lewis Hamilton wowed Farnborough International Airshow attendees today with an exhilarating
display of speed and performance as the Learjet demo team and Learjet brand Ambassador,
Lewis Hamilton, went “head to head” at the Farnborough Airshow in an impressive driving and
flying display.
As airshow spectators looked on, Hamilton rocketed along the TAG Farnborough runway in his
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes race car while the Learjet 60 XR jet sped through the air just 200
meters overhead. The big event kicked off the flying display at the 46th edition of the
Farnborough International Airshow, and marked Hamilton’s first ever appearance at the show.
“Between driving the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes on the race track, and traveling to my race
destinations in high-speed Learjet aircraft, I’ve grown quite used to spending time in high
performance machines,” said Lewis Hamiton, “This event really illustrates my role as the Learjet
Brand Ambassador, and brings home the message that speed is everything.”
With seven Grand Prix wins to his credit, the most recent being the UK Grand Prix just one
week ago, Formula One racing star Lewis Hamilton epitomizes what the Learjet brand stands
for: speed, power, agility and performance.
“What a fantastic event, and what an amazing highlight in the ongoing Year of Learjet
celebrations,” exclaimed Steven Ridolfi, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “Lewis
Hamilton continues to impress the world with his outstanding performance in Formula One
racing, and like Lewis, the Learjet brand is leading the way in the arena of corporate aviation,
making the two a perfect pair.”
Live the Learjet race
The Farnborough event is one of a series of activities in the Year of Learjet – a year long
celebration leading to the 45th anniversary, in October 2008, of the first flight of a Learjet aircraft.
Learjet is the first name in corporate aviation. Since acquiring Learjet Inc. in 1990, Bombardier
has carried forward the brand’s proud legacy by launching eight high-performance and fuelefficient
aircraft, the most recent being the Learjet 85 aircraft.
Learjet 60 XR: In service since July 2007, the Learjet 60 XR is a model of performance,
comfort, value and versatility in the midsize jet market. The aircraft’s higher operating altitudes
certified to 51,000 ft (15,545 m) – translate to time savings due to better winds, less traffic and
less turbulence. With a high cruise speed of Mach 0.81 (861 km/hr), the Learjet 60 XR jet is one
of the fastest aircraft in its category. The aircraft can fly London-Amman non-stop and delivers
superior climb capabilities, with proven fuel-efficiency and low direct operating costs per nautical mile”.
