According to an interview with Montevideo’s El Espectador (as reported in Portal del Uruguay) Mercedes Comas of Price Waterhouse Coopers, Uruguay’s tourism receipts in the first six months of the year reached $550 million , up 20% over the same period last year. In fact, the growth in receipts was the best in Latin America. More than one million tourists arrived in Uruguay in the six months, up 1% over the same period last year. Ms. Comas also reported that tourists are staying longer in the country than previously which helped the increase in receipts. The average stay was 10.6 days, with daily receipts by tourist of $56.80 – down slightly from $57.30 last year. Tourism receipts were second only to meat exports which reached $790 million. While she didn’t mention the percentage of GDP, it is obvious that it is extremely important, certainly in the two digit level. Tourism drives the Uruguayan economy.
