Emirates Airline Buys 60 Airbus Wide-Body Aircraft
July 28, 2008
Dubai based Emirates Airline has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for 30 Airbus A350XWB plus 30 A330-300s. The agreement was signed between Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group and Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO on the occasion of their first A380 delivery in Hamburg, Germany.
At the 10th Dubai Airshow in 2007, Emirates signed a firm order for 70 A350 XWBs with an option for 50 more. Today’s agreement includes the firming up of 30 of these A350 XWB options and will eventually increase Emirates’ total order for the A350 XWB to 100.
Sheikh Ahmed said, “Dubai’s aims to attract 15 million visitors a year by 2012 and Emirates is forging ahead with expansion plans. The A350 XWB and A330 will enable Emirates to expand using modern fuel efficient aircraft and alongside the A380 will be key tools in achieving our goals.”
“Emirates Airline continues to impress with its pace of growth. We are honoured in the faith Emirates places in Airbus and we are delighted that the vision and innovation that are hallmarks of the A330, the A350 and all Airbus aircraft products, will further support the growth and success of Emirates. These orders and the delivery of its first A380, make this a truly remarkable day in the history of both companies,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.
With a true wide-body fuselage allowing very high comfort standards, the A330-300 is able to accommodate seat and class configurations to suit the diverse customer requirements. It has a range of up to 5,650 nm / 10,500 km with a full passenger load. Highly efficient and optimized for the medium – to extended range market, the A330-300 offers the best balance between range and cost, which is reinforced today by high fuel prices. The A330-300 is the current most economical means of flying around 300 passengers on medium range routes in true long-haul comfort.
The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) Family is Airbus’ response to widespread market demand for a series of highly efficient medium-capacity long-range wide-body aircraft. With a range of up to 8,300 nm / 15,400 km, it is available in three basic passenger versions: the A350-800 accommodating 270 passengers, the A350-900 seating 314, and the A350-1000 for 350 passengers in a typical three-class layout. The A350 has the widest fuselage in its category, offering unprecedented levels of comfort, the lowest operating costs and lowest seat mile cost of any aircraft in this market segment. Powered by two new generation Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines delivering each up to 92,000 lbs of thrust, the A350 XWB Family is designed to confront the challenges of high fuel prices, rising passenger expectations, and environmental concerns. Not taking the Emirates LoI into account, firm orders for the aircraft stand at more than 470 from 28 customers.
Airbus Delivers First A380 To Emirates Airline
July 28, 2008
Emirates Airline has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380 aircraft in an historic delivery ceremony with over 500 guests in Hamburg, Germany. The first customer A380 powered by Engine Alliance engines, was presented to Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum and to Emirates President, Tim Clark by Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. Also present was James Moravecek, Engine Alliance President and Bruce Hughes, former Engine Alliance President.
“Emirates was quick to recognise the potential of Airbus’ all new A380 design, with its large double-deck capacity and excellent operating economics. It will be one of the pillars of Emirates’ future,” said Sheikh Ahmed. “With its very low fuel burn and quietness, the A380 also sets new standards in environmental performance. It will definitely help air transportation and Emirates grow, while reducing the impact on the environment,” he added.
At the ceremony, Emirates unveiled its exclusive, spacious and luxurious cabin, featuring 489 seats (14 first class suites, 76 business and 399 economy). For added passenger relaxation, innovative ceiling mood lighting throughout creates a calming starry night sky effect.
“Fulfilling the A380 dream has required vision, innovation, a lot of courage and determination. Emirates shared in this vision early on and today the result is the world’s most modern, innovative and eco-efficient aircraft ever built. The A380 is changing the way people travel. Airbus is proud of all the engineers, staff and customers such as Emirates who have made the A380 a magnificent reality,” said Tom Enders.
Emirates is the largest customer for the A380 with 58 aircraft on order. Four Engine Alliance GP7200 engines delivering up to 72,000 lbs of thrust each will power the aircraft, with a resultant overall fuel efficiency of only three litres of fuel per passenger per 100 kilometres.
“Airbus had the prescience, around a decade ago, to correctly anticipate an environment of high fuel prices, public clamour for quieter airports, fewer emissions, and less crowded skies. This is the kind of superior product vision that has served our industry so well,” former Engine Alliance President Bruce Hughes said.
The aircraft’s efficiency and advanced technologies result in higher operational flexibility and outstanding economics, with a range of more than 15,000 km and seat-mile costs 20 per cent lower than its closest competitor.
The A380 will take-off for the United Arab Emirates on July 29, arriving at Dubai International Airport in the afternoon. Emirates’ first A380 commercial service is on August 1st between Dubai and New York, USA. Currently Emirates Airline has 50 Airbus aircraft in its fleet.
To date, total orders and commitments for the A380 stand at 202 aircraft from 17 customers.

New units to produce metallic airframe structures and composites components and assemblies
São José dos Campos, July 26, 2008 – In a ceremony held today in Lisbon, Embraer
announced plans for implementing two new industrial units dedicated to manufacturing
complex airframe structures, one focused on metallic assemblies and the other on composites,
both of which to be located in the city of Évora, Portugal.
The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Portugal, José Sócrates Carvalho Pinto de
Souza, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Embraer’s President & CEO,
Frederico Fleury Curado, as well as government and press officials from both countries.
“We are pleased to announce new investments in Portugal, which represent another
important strategic step towards improving Embraer’s productivity and competitiveness,
whilst also supporting Company’s growth and its global presence,” said Frederico Fleury
Curado, Embraer President & CEO. “We firmly believe that these technological state-of-theart
operations will represent an important contribution to the region of Évora, as well as to
Portugal and to the European Union, one of our largest and most important markets, both for
our supplies and aircraft sales and services.”
The selection of the city of Évora resulted from a careful evaluation of several factors,
including potential access to qualified labor, logistical infrastructure and the existence of a
technological center dedicated to aeronautics, as set forth in the municipal master plan.
The new factories will be highly automated and use state-of-the-art manufacturing processes,
coherently with the Company’s lean manufacturing initiatives. They will represent an
estimated investment of € 100 million (metallic) and € 48 million (composites) over the next
six years, according to their respective implementation schedules. These investment amounts
were already considered in Embraer’s long term planning and do not alter any of its
economical and financial guidances.
