New Brazilian airline will receive its first jets during the second half of 2008
São José dos Campos, August 18, 2008 – Embraer is training professionals from Azul Linhas
Aéreas, in preparation for the airline to begin operations in January 2009. The program began
with 14 maintenance technicians, who are at the Company’s headquarters, in São José dos
Campos, for 40 days, where a second group, consisting of 13 flight attendants, continues to train.
Ten pilots have already concluded the theoretical classes, and went directly to Orlando,
Florida, in the U.S., where they are training on Embraer aircraft flight simulators. The first
EMBRAER 195 jets should be delivered to Azul in the second half of 2008.
“We are committed to providing training for Azul’s operational and technical personnel, in
order for them to safely operate and maintain their fleet of Embraer aircraft,” said Simon
Newitt, Embraer’s Director of Customer Training. “The prime objective is to prepare these
professionals according to the very highest international standards, in terms of quality and
safety, meeting Azul’s expectations by the time they start operations.”
Headed by businessman David Neeleman, Azul signed a contract with Embraer, in March of
this year, for the purchase of 36 EMBRAER 195 jets. The agreement also includes options for
another 20 aircraft and purchase rights for 20 more.
Azul’s EMBRAER 195 jets will be configured in a single-class layout, comfortably
accommodating 118 passengers. A state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system, with live TV
and individual screens, will be available, and each passenger may select the programming of their
preference. With its range of 2,200 nautical miles (4,077 km), the jet will be able to fly nonstop
routes between any two major Brazilian cities.
About Azul Linhas Aéreas
Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras S.A. will begin operation in January 2009, and for that
purpose it has ordered a fleet of 76 Embraer jets. The focus is on offering distinctive, superior
quality service, without hub airports, linking cities that are not served by current airlines. The
routes that will be operated by the company have yet to be established. After the delivery of
the first aircraft, the company expects to receive one airplane per month for three years,
totaling 36 by the end of 2011. Azul’s EMBRAER 195 jets will have a single-aisle layout,
with leather-covered seats in rows of two, with no middle seat, and will be outfitted with the
most up-to-date aeronautical technology, such as two Head Up Displays (HUD) for pilots,
which will provide a significant increase in flight safety.
About the EMBRAER 170/190 Family of E-Jets
The EMBRAER 170/190 family of E-Jets consists of four commercial jets with 70 to 122
seats, featuring advanced engineering design, efficient performance, outstanding operating
economics, low emissions levels and a spacious cabin.
The E-Jets can fly at a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.82 and 41,000 feet altitude
(12,497 meters), with ranges of up to 2,400 nautical miles (4,448 km). The high degree of
commonality among the four aircraft results in exceptional crew training, spare parts and
maintenance cost reduction for carriers. Another E-Jets key feature is the fly-by-wire
technology used in the flight control systems, similar to that deployed on larger commercial
jets and advanced military aircraft.
The EMBRAER 170/190 family provides superior comfort with its double-bubble fuselage
design that includes two main passenger entrances and two service doors that minimize
aircraft turn-around time. The E-Jets offer much more space for passengers, in a single or
dual-class layout, than other aircraft with similar seating capacities.
The EMBRAER 195 is the largest aircraft of the four-member E-Jets family, and entered
revenue service in September 2006. On June 30, 2008, the EMBRAER 170/190 E-Jets had
logged 847 firm orders and 827 options from more than 45 customers in 30 countries, and had
surpassed 1.5 million flight hours.
