With the Brazilian currency, the ‘real’, strengthening over the US dollar and the Euro, Brazilians spending in international travel was up 60% to $5.5 billion dollars in the first six months of 2008. 1.8 million Brazilians are expected to travel to Europe this year, 750,000 to the United States and 2.9 million will travel to South America and other destinations. The Brazilian ‘real’ has grown in value by 124% against the US dollar since 2003. This has reduced the price of airline tickets. which are quoted in US dollars, by almost 50%. Leonel Rossi, director of ABAV, told the media that in the past three years an airline ticket to Europe or the United States which cost US$1,000 would be purchased for 3,300 ‘reals’. Today the cost of the same ticket has dropped to 1,600 ‘reals’. Favorite international destinations for Brazilians include Europe (with France at the head of the list); The United States (with New York, Orlando, Las Vegas and Washington D.C. being the major destinations); and South America (led by Argentina and Chile). Brazil is no longer a developing market for air travel!
