TAM will be the first airline in the Americas to offer onboard mobile phone service through OnAir, a joint venture of Airbus and SITA. This will enable TAM passengers to use their cell phones and smartphones in flight for voice, SMS messaging or e-mails on South American routes. Startup of operations is expected in the second half of 2009 and is pending approval by Anac, Anatel, and an adjustment to existing legislation that only authorizes cell phone use when an aircraft is on the ground and the doors are open.
