QinetiQ North America Rolls Out a Robotic First: the Field-Transformable Dragon Runner Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle

September 10, 2008

Troops now have fast, transformer-like ability to modify the Dragon Runner
SUGV to fit a variety of critical missions

MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ — QinetiQ North America’s
Technology Solutions Group today launches its new Dragon Runner Small
Unmanned Ground Vehicle (Dragon Runner SUGV). Dragon Runner SUGV is the
first fully modular ground robot system capable of both quick
reconnaissance and improvised explosive device (IED) disarmament in urban,
mountainous or rural environments.

Based on a robot originally designed for the U.S. Marine Corps, the
modular base unit Dragon Runner weighs less than 20 pounds and can be
carried by one person in a standard-issue pack. With field-transformable
features that quickly snap or bolt into place — no special tools required
— Dragon Runner SUGV can morph to fit virtually any mission.

Dragon Runner SUGV can adapt quickly to fit a variety of critical
mission scenarios. These include: reconnaissance inside buildings, sewers,
drainpipes, caves and courtyards; perimeter security using on-board motion
and sound detectors; checkpoint security; in-vehicle and under-vehicle
inspections; and hostage barricade reconnaissance and negotiation.

Operators of Dragon Runner SUGV have the ability to add tracks for
maximum mobility and a manipulator arm with rotating shoulder, wrist and
grippers for dexterity. In addition, day and night pan/tilt/zoom cameras,
motion detectors and a listening capability allow Dragon Runner SUGV to
further extend the combat team’s situational awareness.

Additionally, Dragon Runner SUGV, gives operators field-changeable
frequency capabilities, using analog or digital radio options, to improve
flexibility and range. Standard vehicle and operator control unit batteries
mean that troops can use available government inventory for reduced cost
and improved sustainability, making Dragon Runner SUGV even easier to
integrate into current missions.

“We listened closely to our military customers’ needs, and Dragon
Runner SUGV is the result,” said Dr. William Ribich, President of the
Technology Solutions Group, QinetiQ North America. “We’ve created a
lightweight, modular robot that can climb stairs, open doors, provide
critical reconnaissance information and disarm IEDs — all while protecting
our troops, who control the robot from a safe distance.”

QinetiQ North America also provides a worldwide maintenance and support
plan to return battle-damaged Dragon Runner SUGVs to active duty as quickly
as possible.

“When Dragon Runner SUGV takes a hit, that means at least one soldier
or marine was kept from harm,” Ribich concluded.

Airbus Selects Goodrich Air Data, Ice Detection Systems for A350 XWB Aircraft

September 10, 2008

– Selections are expected to generate more than $600 million in revenue
over 20 years

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 10, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Goodrich
Corporation (NYSE: GR) has been selected by Airbus to supply the air data
system (ADS) as well as ice detection system for the new A350 XWB (Xtra
Wide-Body) commercial aircraft. Together, the awards are expected to
generate more than $600 million in original equipment and aftermarket
revenue over 20 years. Work will be performed by Goodrich’s Sensors and
Integrated Systems team in Burnsville, Minn.

The ADS provides all critical air data parameters to the vehicle
management computers for the aircraft’s flight control and pilot display
systems. SmartProbe(TM) and SmartPort(R) air data sensing technology allows
integration of multi-function sensing ports, pressure sensors and
processing capability through the elimination of pneumatic lines. The total
number of discrete product installations is reduced, overall weight is
decreased, and reliability and maintainability are significantly improved.

The ice detection system provides advisory indication of ice buildup
and enables the flight crew to activate the aircraft’s ice protection
system at the optimal time. The system helps reduce fuel consumption by
activating the energy-consuming de-ice function only when required.
Goodrich is the only company certified by the FAA to provide primary ice
detection systems for commercial aircraft.

“Both the air data and ice detection systems for the A350 are
evolutions of the systems Goodrich provides for the Airbus A380, and we
expect customers to reap the benefits of maturity and commonality,” said
Jan Mathiesen, Vice President, Goodrich Sensors and Integrated Systems.
“These selections continue Goodrich’s role as the leading provider of air
data systems as well as ice detection systems to the aerospace industry
worldwide.”

Goodrich’s content on the A350 also includes nacelle and thrust
reverser systems. The A350 XWB Family is Airbus’ response to widespread
market demand for a series of highly efficient medium-capacity long-range
wide-body aircraft. With a range of up to 8,300 nautical miles, it is
available in three basic passenger versions accommodating between 270 and
350 passengers in a typical three-class layout.

Goodrich Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, is a global supplier of
systems and services to aerospace, defense and homeland security markets.
With one of the most strategically diversified portfolios of products in
the industry, Goodrich serves a global customer base with significant
worldwide manufacturing and service facilities. For more information, visit

TAM Signs Contract for Mobile Communications Aboard Its Aircraft

September 10, 2008

Agreement signed with OnAir will make the company the first in the Americas
to offer this technology

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — TAM Linhas Aereas
(Bovespa: TAMM4 and NYSE: TAM) will be the first airline in the Americas to
offer onboard mobile phone service on its Airbus A320s, to be provided by
OnAir — a joint venture of Airbus and Sita, an organization that develops
cutting edge technology for aviation. A trail-blazing partnership signed
with the company will enable TAM passengers to use their cell phones and
smartphones in flight — for voice, SMS messaging or emails — on South
American routes.

The system is expected to begin working in the second half of 2009. The
startup of operations will depend on approval by the National Agency of
Civil Aviation (Anac) and the National Agency of Telecommunications
(Anatel), as well as the adjustment of legislation that only authorizes
cell phone use when the aircraft is on the ground and the doors are open.

The announcement of the agreement took place this Wednesday in Long
Beach, California (USA) at the trade fair of the World Airline
Entertainment Association (WAEA), the largest event in the world devoted to
onboard entertainment. The system was certified by the European Aviation
Safety Agency (Easa), and its use was recently regulated by the European
Union. The mechanism ensures complete safety for passengers, since it
prevents signals from devices from causing interference in the aircrafts
commands. In addition, should the need arise, the system can be shut down
at any time. The company chose the OnAir system after two years of
assessing connectivity solutions available on the market.

“Offering this advanced technology to our customers confirms our
leadership in the airline market in Brazil, and is one more example of our
constant quest for Service Excellence, one of the pillars of our company,”
states TAM president, Captain David Barioni Neto. “Our passengers,
particularly those traveling in business class, will be able to stay in
contact with their offices and clients, enhancing efficiency and
productivity.”

OnAir president, Benoit Debains, underscored TAM’s status as a pioneer
in adopting this onboard communications system. “We are very pleased by the
fact that TAM, one of the leaders in innovation in passenger service, and
the largest airline in South America, has chosen OnAir to implement this
additional benefit for its passengers,” he said.

Not A Bird, Not A Plane, It’s Flight Of The Jet Man!

WITNESS MAN’S FIRST ATTEMPT TO FLY ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL WITH A
JETPACK

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL TO WEBCAST LIVE COVERAGE FOLLOWED BY
PRIMETIME SPECIAL

Part Superhero – Part Adventurer Attempts 12-Minute Journey Into the
History Books

Flight of the Jet Man is Scheduled for Wednesday, September 24,
Conditions Permitting

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — In just weeks, one man
will be the first to attempt to fly across the English Channel using a
single, jet-propelled wing attached to his back. Swiss adventurer Yves
Rossy will fire up his homemade jet wing, jump from a plane and attempt to
cross the 23-mile channel in 12 minutes at about 120 mph. The National
Geographic Channel (NGC) has exclusive U.S. access to his historic flight
and will stream Rossy’s mission LIVE at http://www.natgeotv.com/jetman, as well as
broadcast a special one-hour program that same night. Internationally, the
event will air LIVE in 167 countries (excluding France, Switzerland and
Canada) on NGC and its Web site. Rossy is scheduled to make his attempt
Wednesday, September 24, subject to weather conditions, with a daily
contingency window through Friday, September 26. NGC is committed to
covering this event whichever day it occurs.

Live coverage will stream on the NGC Web site, http://www.natgeotv.com/jetman,
and document Rossy’s flight from his takeoff near Calais, France, to his
landing almost 15 minutes later in Dover, U.K. The live online coverage
will begin at 7 a.m. ET / 4 a.m. PT with Rossy’s preparations and his
scheduled launch expected at approximately 8 a.m. ET / 5 a.m. PT. The
entire process and flight will be distilled into an hour-long special,
Flight of the Jet Man, that will air on NGC that same night at 9 p.m.
ET/PT. (Contingency note: if the attempt is delayed until Friday, September
26, the primetime show will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT, due to the presidential
debate.)

Flight of the Jet Man will cover every angle of this historic chapter
in aviation history, beginning on the ground in France as Rossy reviews
safety measures just before takeoff — especially important as his
jet-propelled wing needs to be ignited while still inside the plane — and
following as he attempts to touch down in England and enter the annals of
history. Cameras in his launch plane and on a helicopter will be
supplemented by another mounted on the jetpack wing to capture dramatic
aerial coverage throughout the flight.

Rossy, who refers to himself to as “Fusion Man” because he represents a
true fusion between pilot and plane, will jump from a plane almost 2 miles
above the ground and soar at speeds reaching approximately 120 mph using a
specialized wing weighing about 120 pounds (including four kerosene-burning
jet turbines). Created from a lightweight carbon composite, the wing has no
steering devices; Rossy uses his head and back to control his movements.
Outfitted with a special suit, helmet and parachute, Rossy has taken
extensive precautions to protect himself from the four jet turbines resting
just a few inches away from him on the wing.

“I have enormous admiration for the pioneers of aviation,” says Rossy.
“There is great beauty in the exploits of Bleriot and Lindbergh, for
example. They risked their lives to discover the path not taken, to go
where no one has gone before.”

Part of a fearless fraternity of experimental pilots, Rossy will take a
route mirroring that of French pioneer Louis Bleriot, who dared to be the
first to cross the English Channel in an airplane 99 years ago. To achieve
his own defining moment in aviation, Rossy must overcome significant
challenges along the way. The wing weight and measurements must be
incredibly precise — even the addition of cameras mounted on the wing to
record his flight may impact how long he is able to stay in the air.
Likewise, weather conditions must be just right for him to fly long enough
to complete the journey. Although test flights in wind tunnels and the
Swiss Alps have helped Rossy polish the wing and his skills, only time will
tell if he is able to accomplish this great feat.

Flight of the Jet Man is produced for National Geographic Channel and
National Geographic Channels International by Cirrus Communications. Andre
Barro from Cirrus and Bernard Vaillot from Galaxie Productions are the
executive producers. Kathryn Liptrott is producer for Cirrus. For NGC-US,
executive producer is Kathleen Cromley and executive vice president of
content is Steve Burns; for NGCI, executive vice president of content is
Sydney Suissa.
