Soloy Receives FAA Certification for Turbine Cessna 206

October 29, 2008

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Soloy Aviation Solutions received FAA certification on Oct. 28 for its Soloy 206 Turbine Mk II. A turbine version of the popular piston Cessna 206H, the Mk II is a quantum leap in performance, reliability and efficiency.

Featuring the light Rolls Royce 250-B17F/2 turbine engine, the Mk II provides an increase of 110hp over the Cessna 206H, boosting the aircraft’s ability to carry more weight, fly faster and operate in high and hot conditions. Additionally, this increased power, paired with the aircraft’s Hartzell three-bladed prop with full beta reverse features, makes the Mk II the ideal STOL aircraft, especially in its amphibious configuration.

“The Mk II is the perfect platform for vast number of applications, from law enforcement to adventurous backcountry operations,” said Dave Stauffer, president of Soloy Aviation Solutions. “The lighter turbine engine increases the power while reducing the basic empty weight by approximately 150 pounds. This allows an operator to add more equipment, such as in a law enforcement application, or allow a pilot who might have only been able to carry additional gear into a remote landing strip or lake to pack in the four people and gear to high altitudes on even hot days. No other aircraft in this class can offer that.”

The Mk II is fast, efficient and affordable to operate. The aircraft can climb at 2,460 fpm at sea level, cruise at 20k feet at 213 ktas airspeed, carry 775 lbs with full fuel, and has an approximately 550 nm-mile range. It’s a neighbor-friendly plane, registering 72.4 db when operating at take-off power (417 hp/2030 rpm) as required by the latest FAR regulations. The Mk II is also the most reliable 206 on the market. The proven Rolls-Royce 250-B17F/2 turbine engine and its subsequent derating for certification both significantly enhance reliability and reduce overall operating costs.

Soloy’s Mk II also includes a number of upgrades to the standard 206 in response to customer requests. In refitting the aircraft for a turbine engine, Soloy engineers increased the aircraft’s electrical capacity to 185 amps continuous, allowing the aircraft to handle the power load of air conditioning, law enforcement equipment and sensors, and increased pilot avionics. Additional options include the highly coveted recessed headliner and four point restraint harness that greatly increases pilot and co-pilot comfort.

The Mk II is initially offered in four configurations: law enforcement, skydiving, amphibious and commercial/private operations.

The law enforcement configuration includes a floor to ceiling observer window and a tactical officer station complete with Soloy’s swivel observer seat, which latches into a forward facing position for take off, then can be swiveled to look out the observer window once airborne.  Custom installations of instrumentation, flat panel monitors and law enforcement equipment are available to meet customer’s mission requirements and will interface with the Soloy multi-sensor, wing-mounted camera mount currently under development.

The skydive configuration includes a roll up jump door, spoiler to reduce the harmonizing effect of the open door, hand grips and steps.

The amphibious version offers Wipaire 3450 amphibious floats with retractable landing gear with the increased gross weight of 3,800 pounds.

The commercial/private configuration can be completed to the owner’s specifications, including a list of top of the line cockpit avionics. A glass panel cockpit option is under development and will be available to retrofit the older Cessna 206H configurations with Cessna Nav II avionics.

Soloy has started accepting orders and currently has a half a dozen Mk II aircraft in work and plans to deliver the first aircraft later this month.  Come visit us at the Rolls-Royce booth on November 6-8 at AOPA EXPO 2008 in San Jose, CA and see the new Soloy Turbine Cessna 206 Mark II.

Soloy Aviation Solutions is a world-renown engineering company specializing in the design and development of specialized solutions for the aviation community. Founded more than 40 years ago on the idea of bringing turbine engine technology to piston aircraft, Soloy has engineered and manufactured hundreds of unique aviation products, STCs and patented aviation solutions to enhance fixed wing and helicopter aviation.

Construction Begins on Cessna’s Citation Columbus Facility in Wichita
WICHITA, Kan., Oct. 29, 2008 – Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius joined Cessna Aircraft Company Chairman, President and CEO Jack J. Pelton this morning to celebrate the start of construction of the company’s new Wichita Citation Columbus design and assembly facility. Cessna is a Textron (NYSE: TXT) company

Sebelius and Pelton were joined by local and state legislative and business leaders and a small representation of Cessna’s 12,000 Wichita employees.
“Being able to call Kansas home for the Citation Columbus is important to Cessna and it wouldn’t be possible without the team effort shown earlier this year,” Pelton said. “Today is our way of recognizing how big of a victory this is for Cessna, Wichita and Kansas, and to again thank everyone who played a part in making this happen.”

Cessna announced it will build the assembly facility at its Mid-Continent facility in April following approval by the Kansas Legislature of a new incentive measure designed to keep and attract new business. Among those collaborating with the legislators on the package were the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County, Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition and the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce. Sebelius signed the bill during a visit to Cessna on April 23.

“Landing the Citation Columbus sends a strong message that Kansas will compete to keep and grow aviation jobs,” Sebelius said. “But this reaches far beyond aviation and the direct jobs created at Cessna. Research shows that each aviation job creates an additional 2.9 jobs, which means a total of nearly 4,000 future new jobs in Kansas as a result of this new plant.”

The stand-alone, 600,000-square-foot facility is being built near the intersection of K-42 and Hoover on the Cessna campus adjacent to Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. Wichita firms McCluggage Van Sickle & Perry and Professional Engineering Consultants, P.A. have been hired for architecture and engineering work, respectively.

Cessna and the design team are working toward compliance with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system for this facility. The new building will house engineering offices and final assembly for the Citation Columbus – the largest and longest-range business jet in the Cessna Citation family of business jets.

Cessna was given the go-ahead for the program by the Textron board of directors on Jan. 23. Textron is investing $780 million into development of the Citation Columbus, Cessna’s newest and largest business jet. The program will create up to 1,000 new jobs at Cessna with an estimated annual payroll of $74 million.

“The hard work of employees past and present has made it possible for us to launch a program as massive as the Citation Columbus,” Pelton said. “Despite the uncertainty of the short-term economic environment, we believe it is critical that we not compromise our future.”

The all-new aircraft’s large, comfortable cabin is configurable for up to 10 passengers and is expected to exceed top competitor passenger seating room. The Columbus also is expected to lead its segment with its combination of speed and range.

The Citation Columbus follows the design philosophy of other Citations by using an aluminum airframe, and it contains structural and cabin interior features to maximize interior cabin space. Cessna’s engineering team and its co-development suppliers have designed the clean-sheet Columbus to be one of the most advanced, fuel-efficient, cleanest business jets ever conceived. The price for the Citation Columbus is $27 million in 2008 U.S. dollars. Cessna plans to achieve Federal Aviation Administration certification for the Citation Columbus by the end of 2013, with deliveries beginning in 2014.

Bombardier Aircraft Executes a Historic First Flight

October 28, 2008

WICHITA, KANSAS–(Marketwire – Oct. 28, 2008) – Today, Bombardier Aerospace announced another milestone in the advancement of civil aviation: a Bombardier test aircraft executed a first flight equipped entirely with an all electric braking system – a civil aviation first. The testing lasted in excess of seven hours, included five landings and a series of high-speed braked ground runs. The Bombardier demonstator aircraft was equipped with Meggitt’s electric braking system – known as the EBrake®, and Messier-Dowty’s landing gear with electric brake wiring harnesses.

On board the test aircraft were engineering test pilots, Gary Bruce and Jeff Karnes, along with flight test engineer, Anthony Dunne. “We tested the Ebrake® system’s normal, emergency and park braking functionality during both ground and flight tests. It provided improved braking control in normal and emergency operating modes, resulting in tight centerline control even during maximum brake applications,” said Gary Bruce, Pilot in Command.

“We at Bombardier are commited to, and take pride in, aircraft innovation,” said Francois Caza, Vice President and Chief Engineer, Bombardier Aerospace. “This successful first flight highlights Bombardier’s commitment to the advancement of aviation technology. It is part of a comprehensive technology development program covering various areas, including avionics, aircraft configurations, advanced structures and advanced manufacturing methods,” he added.

Electric braking is the next evolution in aerospace braking system technology for it couples brake-by-wire control with electric brake actuation. Bombardier’s strategic technology demonstrator aircraft was modified by removing its hydraulically actuated brake-by-wire control system. In its place, a complete electric brake-by-wire system, with fully integrated anti-skid protection, emergency and parking brake functions was installed.

The key benefits of this new technology are an expected increase in the aircraft’s dispatch reliability; elimination of brake system hydraulic leaks with associated fire risk; simplification of the aircraft’s manufacturing process; and reduced maintenance costs for airlines. In addition to these tangible aircraft level benefits, electric brake technology falls in-line with the industry evolution towards more electric aircraft providing a more fuel efficient, cleaner-burning aircraft and reducing the usage of toxic hydraulic fluids.

Earlier this month, on October 6, 2008, Bombardier and Meggitt announced they are collaborating to deploy the newest brake system technology available on Bombardier’s strategic technology aircraft. Featuring Meggitt’s electrically actuated carbon brake system – known as the EBrake® – this aircraft tested all the system’s capabilities, including normal, emergency and parking modes. Meggitt’s system will also remain on the aircraft for an extended period of time to validate the robustness and reliability of its design.

Bombardier’s dedicated Strategic Technology department has been evaluating, designing and developing new technologies to introduce safer, turn-key and state-of-the-art solutions to the civil aviation market. Other projects that highlight Bombardier’s dedication to innovation include: development of a complete and generic fly-by-wire system with Parker Aerospace; research and development of composite structures using automated fiber-placement technology, as well as other composite manufacturing technologies.
