RWSL to Increase Runway Safety by Giving Pilots Direct Warning of
Potential Incursion

EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ — The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has selected Sensis Corporation to deploy Runway
Status Lights (RWSL) at major airports across the U.S. Sensis has teamed
with Siemens USA and HNTB Corporation to implement the RWSL program. RWSL
is a system of red lights embedded in the pavement of runways that
automatically warns pilots if it is unsafe to cross or enter a runway and
“take-off hold lights” that indicate if a runway is unsafe for departure.

“Sensis has drawn on more than a decade of airport surveillance and
conflict prediction and alerting technology advancements as well as over 80
deployments around the world to deliver a complete runway status light
solution,” said Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of

noted that runway status lights are another valuable tool in reducing the
risk of runway incursions. Along with ASDE-X, runway status lights will
provide an added layer of runway safety.”

RWSL operates by automatically illuminating red lights if the airport’s
Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) detects traffic on or
approaching the same runway.

The Sensis-led team will work with the FAA and the airports to tailor
the lighting design and implementation at each site. Sensis will create,
test and optimize the RWSL light activation Safety Logic to integrate RWSL
with ASDE-X. Siemens USA will deliver the field lighting systems and HNTB

Sandel Avionics Announces Enhanced WAAS Features for the SN4500 Primary Navigation Display

October 15, 2008

Software update for the SN4500 will Allow the Display of WAAS Approach Type Annunciations

Vista, CA (October 3, 2008)—Sandel Avionics has announced a software update for its SN4500 Primary Navigation Display to allow the display of WAAS approach type annunciations when interfaced to an appropriate GPS or FMS. This adds additional capability to the SN4500 which already supports the display of GPS/WAAS lateral and vertical deviation and the GPS Integrity warning annunciation.

“This new feature is a direct result of conversations with our dealer base,” said Jerry Henry, Sandel’s Director of Sales. “More and more business jet owners are inquiring about updating their FMS for WAAS approaches and many installations will require additional equipment to show GPS Integrity and WAAS approach type annunciations. With the SN4500 they can upgrade the legacy electromechanical HSI in the aircraft to a new electronic moving-map display while saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars in parts and labor by not having to install a remote annunciator panel.”

The WAAS approach type annunciations are ‘LPV’ (Lateral Precision Approach with Vertical Guidance), ‘LP’ (Lateral Precision Approach), ‘LVNAV’ (Lateral Navigation with Vertical Guidance Approach) and ‘L NAV’ (Lateral Navigation Approach). Availability of the new SN4500 software is November, 2008. SN4500 units in the field can have the software updated by an authorized Sandel dealer.

The  SN4500 Primary Navigation Display is a 4-ATI sized unit which uses Sandel’s patented rear-projection display technology with LED-backlighting for maximum sunlight readability, 180-degree viewing angle, bright color rendition and an MTBF of over 10,000 hours. It replaces electromechanical HSIs with a full-color moving map that has the capability to show flight plans, bearing pointers, Stormscope™ and optional traffic and weather overlays. List price of the SN4500 is $20,950.

Sandel Avionics, located in Vista, California, is a privately held company that designs and manufactures high-performance 3- and 4-ATI Primary Attitude and Navigation Displays, completely self contained Class A and B TAWS solutions and solid-state sensors for new installation and numerous retrofits in general aviation, business aviation, air transport, government and military aircraft. Sandel’s products have been installed in thousands of aircraft throughout the world since its first shipment in 1998. Additional information can be found at www.sandel.com. Sandel Avionics and S-TEC Announce Successful Pairing of Flight Displays and Autopilots

SA4550 Primary Attitude Display Now an Approved Flight Director for use with S-TEC Autopilots

Vista, CA (October 3, 2008)—Sandel Avionics and S-TEC have announced the successful testing of Sandel’s SA4550 Primary Attitude Display with S-TEC’s System 55, 55X, 60-2 and 65 autopilots. S-TEC will list the SA4550 as an approved flight director for use with these autopilots.

“This opens the door for numerous aircraft owners, especially in the turboprop market, who would like an affordable upgrade for their flight directors and autopilots ,” said Jerry Henry, Sandel’s Director of Sales. “Our Product Support team worked with S-TEC to verify that our products are compatible and we are pleased that a combined solution is now available for our mutual customers.”

“The Sandel high-definition attitude and navigation displays are fantastic replacements for worn-out mechanical flight instruments. Because they are modular replacements, they deliver an amazing array of digital display capabilities without needing to totally replace an entire panel,” explained S-TEC’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Greg Plantz. “The ability to now do a simple Field Approval and be able to offer owner/operators the option of replacing their old-generation autopilot with a high-performance S-TEC autopilot/flight director computer system just makes the whole package that much more appealing.”

“We have worked closely with the team at Sandel to develop this approval and the interface units” Plantz added. “The interfaces enable pilots to have flight director capabilities with any of our coupled autopilots at a fraction of the cost of a fully-integrated upgrade solution.”

The SA4550 Primary Attitude Display is a 4-ATI sized display which uses Sandel’s patented rear‑projection display technology with LED-backlighting for maximum sunlight readability, 180-degree viewing angle, bright color rendition and an MTBF of over 10,000 hours. Both single- and dual-cue flight director command bars are supported and can be toggled by the pilot. In many cases the installation of the SA4550 will be covered under Sandel’s Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) Approved Model List (AML). Otherwise the installation can be approved through the Field Approval process of the FAA. The SA4550 can also be combined with the SN4500 Primary Navigation Display which functions as an Electronic-HSI with a full-color moving map that has the capability to show flight plans, bearing pointers, Stormscope™ and optional traffic and weather overlays. The SN4500 is also compatible with S-TEC autopilots. List price of the SA4550 and SN4500 is $20,950 for each display.

S-TEC’s System 55, 55X, 60-2 and 65 are very popular full function autopilots that have received STCs for installation in numerous aircraft, including turboprop models such as King Airs and Twin Commanders.
