Bombardier Builds on Record of Reliable Operations at San Francisco International Airport

BERLIN, GERMANY–(Marketwire – Dec. 3, 2008) – Bombardier Transportation has signed an 8-year contract with the City and County of San Francisco to operate and maintain the Automated People Mover (APM) system at San Francisco (SFO) International Airport. The contract is valued at approximately 80 million euros ($101 million US).

Bombardier has operated and maintained the APM system, known as SFO AirTrain, since it opened to passenger service in 2003. Using the BOMBARDIER CX-100 technology, the 2-line APM system operates 24 hours a day, consistently surpassing the contract availability of 99.5 %. The AirTrain fleet of 38 CX-100 vehicles serves nine stations along 10 kilometres (6 miles) of elevated guideway and connects all the airport’s terminals, parking garages and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station with the Rental Car Center.

Michael Shaman, Vice President, Operations and Maintenance, Bombardier Transportation’s Systems Division commented: “We are delighted to strengthen our valued partnership with San Francisco International Airport. Since AirTrain opened to service five years ago, we have provided its passengers with an enjoyable and reliable ride experience.” He added: “Recent passenger surveys conducted by an independent research organization in the aviation industry recognized SFO as the best airport in North America in 2008. We are proud of our contribution to its success.”

John L. Martin, Airport Director, said: “SFO is very pleased to be continuing its long-standing relationship with Bombardier. Since start-up, the SFO AirTrain has been a model airport people mover system, with a high level of service and reliability, providing the critical link between the terminals, parking garages, rental car facility and BART. We appreciate the commitment to SFO that Bombardier and the AirTrain staff demonstrate daily in their efforts to make the SFO AirTrain meet the highest quality standards of SFO.”

SFO AirTrain was the first transit system in the world to deploy communications-based train control – the BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 automatic train control (ATC) technology.

Among other features, CITYFLO 650 ATC allows a high degree of operating flexibility to accommodate peak passenger demands.

With over 35 years of operations and maintenance (O&M) experience, Bombardier provides a comprehensive range of O&M services for its fully automated systems in airports around the world. These include Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Jersey, New York, Orlando, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Tampa, and Seattle, USA; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Beijing, China; and Frankfurt, London, Madrid, and Rome, Europe.
