SkyTeam Unveils Sleek New Web Site

December 15, 2008

Layout offers customers quicker, easier access to alliance benefits

NEW YORK, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Consistent with SkyTeam’s “Caring More About You” philosophy, today the airline alliance launched a redesigned version of its Web site, www.skyteam.com. The new customer-centered Web design aims to create an intuitive user experience that quickly delivers visitors the content they need from SkyTeam. With a fresh new look and clearer navigational features, the new Web site reinforces the excitement of global travel.

“Whether flying for business or pleasure, across the country or around the world, SkyTeam customers depend on our global network for quality service from start to finish,” said Leo van Wijk, chairman of the SkyTeam alliance. “By upgrading our Web site and incorporating user-friendly features that offer easier access to flight information, frequent flyer programs and airport and destination guides, we have enhanced the value of skyteam.com for our customers around the world.”

New features to the site, which launched today in English and will be available in April 2009 in 10 additional languages: Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish, include:

  • New structure with more emphasis on customer needs and preferences.
  • “Get ready to Go” section that compiles helpful destination information in one place.
  • Revamped travel tools that include convenient, time-saving itinerary displays.
  • Rich graphics and a more modern design.

One of the most significant changes to skyteam.com is the structure. The new passenger-centric interface includes organizational tools designed to deliver quick and direct access to the information customers need most. Clear and concise navigation bars help increase efficiency and provide users immediate access to SkyTeam customer benefits, details about airport lounges, connection information and in-flight amenities. Icon-tagged buttons with simple travel planning choices make it easy to find answers to passengers’ most commonly asked questions right on the homepage.

With a focus on user-friendliness, the site has been updated with rotating channels that bring the most engaging information straight to the homepage. With this tool, online visitors receive the latest information from SkyTeam without even clicking a button. A search function has also been added to help users locate specific information using a keyword search.

The “Get ready to Go” section contains visual links to city and airport guides for SkyTeam’s 60 most popular destinations. Users can now review terminal maps and download lounge locations from the same page they access dining and sightseeing information. By compiling all of the planning resources into one Web site, visitors can spend less time searching for information and more time learning about the destinations they plan to visit.

As part of the Web site upgrade, the travel tools were significantly enhanced. The flight search tool has been simplified with a visual calendar that provides an easier way to enter trip information, and a new sidebar enables customers to build and save personalized itineraries from their flight search results. Users can update these itineraries with the simple click of a button. This feature will help save time and reduce stress for those travellers planning multi-destination trips.

Rich graphics and visual representation of SkyTeam’s most popular destinations infuse more modern design to the Web site.

“As a global airline alliance, SkyTeam strives to create a system of cooperation which has genuine benefits for the customer,” said Leo van Wijk. “This new version of skyteam.com allows us to bring our customers a unique resource that meets all of their travel needs under one site.”

The redesign of skyteam.com was conducted by the global agency, Draftfcb.

Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower Engine Wins Technology Breakthrough Award in China

December 15, 2008

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ — Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower engine family has been recognized with the 2008 Technology Breakthrough Award from the China Aviation Association and AVIC Science and Technology department. The award, presented at China’s largest air show in Zhuhai, recognizes innovation in commercial aviation and aerospace. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“We are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award, which recognizes the game-changing technology in our PurePower family of engines,” said Todd Kallman, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines & Global Services. “The PurePower engine will deliver double-digit improvements in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs. This is a truly comprehensive solution to the economic and environmental challenges facing our industry and we are proud to bring this product to the market.”

“The world aviation industry faces tremendous pressure for profitable operations and these challenges call for a next-generation engine powering a next-generation aircraft,” said Zhang Ju En, secretary general, China Aviation Association, at the ceremony. “We are glad to see that Pratt & Whitney is taking the lead to be the pioneer with the successful development of this game-changing product. The PurePower engine will bring significant environmental and economical benefits to the aviation industry.”

The PurePower PW1000G engine uses a state-of-the-art gear system allowing the engine’s fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The result is a step-change improvement in fuel efficiency and a slower fan speed for much lower noise. The PurePower PW1000G engine is an all new centerline engine that includes next generation technology in every major module.

In 2007, Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1000G engine was selected as the exclusive power for the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet and the Bombardier CSeries. The Mitsubishi Regional Jet program announced its first customer in March 2008, with an order from All Nippon Airways. The CSeries was launched in July 2008 with a letter of interest for up to 60 aircraft from Lufthansa. Both aircraft are scheduled to enter service in 2013.

Pratt & Whitney has more than 16,000 aircraft engines installed with hundreds of airlines around the world. Pratt & Whitney is also a leading partner in two joint venture companies that manufacture commercial aircraft engines: International Aero Engines, which makes the V2500 for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, and the Engine Alliance, whose GP7200 engine is in service on the Airbus A380.

Industry Leaders Address State of Region’s Air Transport at 5th Annual ALTA Airline Leaders Forum and Annual General Meeting

December 15, 2008

— Safety, Costs and Environment Top Priorities —

— Members Appoint New ALTA Executive Committee —

MIAMI, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ — Over 300 industry leaders from more than 35 countries attended last week’s 5th Annual ALTA Airline Leaders Forum and Annual General Meeting in Cancun, Mexico, including the leading airline CEOs and presidents of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as representatives from more than 40 airlines and 20 civil aviation authorities, among other industry executives.

Leaders discussed the current unprecedented industry crisis resulting from the current global economic crisis, tight credit markets, and cost uncertainties. During his opening address, ALTA President and Copa Airlines CEO Pedro Heilbron affirmed that “although the short-term outlook remains uncertain, long-term growth is expected for the Latin America and Caribbean region with passenger traffic in the region continuing to grow above the world average.”

In order to achieve this growth, the region is addressing challenges and developing actions in the areas of fragmentation, the high tax and fees environment, unsuccessful airport privatization model, infrastructure, and an under-valued air transport industry. Despite these challenges, ALTA and its members remain committed to three major priorities — safety, costs and the environment — which were the focus of discussions throughout the conference.

“Although the future is anything but certain,” added Heilbron, “governments, authorities, suppliers, airports and airlines need to work together. ALTA and its airlines will be here, working together with all of the industry players for an even brighter future awaits us.”

ADOPTED RESOLUTIONS:

ALTA’s members adopted two resolutions which passed unanimously during its Annual General Meeting calling for action on important industry issues, including a call to governments and regulatory authorities in the areas of safety, and airports and air navigation providers.

“Although the Latin America and Caribbean region has recently been out-performing other parts of the world, there is a strong need to remain competitive,” said ALTA Executive Director Alex de Gunten. “We must prepare ourselves and take these steps to minimize the effects of the crisis.”

Resolution 6/2008: ALTA members urge governing authorities and regulatory entities in charge of airport and air navigation providers to ensure that prices for services are cost based, transparent and in line with ICAO regulations. The resolution also calls for national regulations to incorporate guidelines that reflect ICAO 9082, and ensure independent oversight entities in charge of concessions, and privatizations of airports and air navigation providers.

Resolution 7/2008: ALTA members urge authorities, airports, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, insurers and other stakeholders to work together in a coordinated effort to improve operational safety in the region in accordance with recommendations and standards from ICAO (RASG-Regional Air Safety Group), IATA (IOSA-IATA Operational Safety Audit and ISAGO-IATA Safety Audit Ground Operations) and ALTA (SEI-Safety Enhancement Initiative).

NEW ALTA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:

ALTA also appointed its new six-member executive committee, responsible for guiding the association’s efforts and facilitating the development of air transport throughout the Latin America and Caribbean region. Chairman of Grupo TACA Roberto Kriete was appointed as the new president of ALTA and Fabio Villegas, CEO of Avianca, was appointed as the new Vice President of ALTA, with the rest of the executive committee as follows:

-- President - Roberto Kriete, Chairman Grupo TACA
-- Vice President - Fabio Villegas, CEO, Avianca
-- Pedro Heilbron, Copa Airlines CEO
-- Enrique Cueto, CEO, LAN Airlines
-- Manuel Borja Chico, CEO Mexicana
-- David Barioni Neto, TAM CEO

“ALTA will redouble its efforts to ensure that we have a safer and more efficient industry in the region,” said newly appointed ALTA President Roberto Kriete during the Forum’s closing session. “I look forward to building on the great efforts of my predecessor.”

ALTA is currently in the process of confirming dates and location for its 2009 Airline Leaders Forum with Cartagena, Colombia currently as the preferred destination.

Líderes de la Industria Se Pronuncian Sobre la Situación del Transporte Aéreo de la Región en el 5º Foro Anual de Líderes de Aerolíneas y Asamblea General Anual de ALTA

December 15, 2008

— Presidente – Roberto Kriete, Presidente Grupo TACA
— Vicepresidente – Fabio Villegas, CEO Avianca
— Pedro Heilbron, CEO Copa Airlines
— Enrique Cueto, CEO LAN Airlines
— Manuel Borja Chico, CEO Mexicana
— David Barioni Neto, CEO TAM
