MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the Aerospace & Defense market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes ITT Communications Systems (ITT) with the 2008 North American Frost & Sullivan award for Military Software Defined Radio Growth Strategy Excellence of the Year. ITT has shown unwavering commitment to delivering the latest in secure tactical voice and data communications to the American warfighter, through the company’s definitive line of Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio Systems (SINCGARS).

SINCGARS forms the basis of the Army’s Combat Net Radio (CNR) capabilities, as a robust, secure, and user-friendly tactical VHF radio on both vehicular and man-pack configurations. First introduced in the 1980s, some 400,000-plus SINCGARS radios have been fielded by the U.S. Conceived originally as a voice-only radio, SINCGARS has evolved to become a comprehensive voice and data radio, with the SINCGARS waveform found on various airborne and ground assets.

“ITT’s ubiquitous SINCGARS radios not only enhance informational superiority, but also save warfighters’ lives,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Garrick Ngai. “Critical to SINCGARS’s continued growth and relevance on the modern battlefield are the successive enhancements made in size, weight, power, and software architecture that enable users to do more with less.”

The latest generation of SINCGARS feature a unique module called “SideHat,” which enables the single channel transceiver to run the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) on a second, UHF channel. SRW is the networking waveform in which JTRS Handheld, Man-pack and Small Form Fit (HMS) software defined core radios will operate on in the future, providing high-speed high capacity tactical networking between warfighters, sensors, and unmanned systems.

To further solidify SINCGARS’s future growth prospects, ITT recently announced a teaming agreement with General Dynamics C4 Systems, the lead systems integrator for JTRS HMS radios, to develop a SCA-compliant iteration of its SideHat called Small Form Fit-SideHat (SFF-S) for the 250,000-plus SINCGARS already fielded by the Army. The development of SFF-S radios will enable end users to leverage even greater value from existing and future SINCGARS inventories.

“SINCGARS’s interoperability and future relevance with software-defined tactical communications will secure ITT’s position as a leader in the software programmable and software defined radio market well into the future,” notes Ngai. “With a comprehensive range of other interoperable tactical solutions such as Radio Based Combat ID (RBCI) system.”

In short, SINCGARS are and will continue to be a premier tactical radio solution, evolving from generation to generation, especially with new technologies such as SRW that “future proof” it from the threat of obsolescence. In recognition of this unflagging commitment to furthering SINCGARS technology, Frost & Sullivan is honored to present ITT with the 2008 U.S. Military Software Defined Radio Growth Strategy Excellence Award. Each year, this award is presented to a company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing and sustaining growth within shipments, revenues, and profitability.
