Frost & Sullivan Lauds ITT for the SINCGARS Family of Tactical Radios for Warfighters
January 7, 2009
SINCGARS forms the basis of the Army’s Combat Net Radio (CNR) capabilities, as a robust, secure, and user-friendly tactical VHF radio on both vehicular and man-pack configurations. First introduced in the 1980s, some 400,000-plus SINCGARS radios have been fielded by the U.S. Conceived originally as a voice-only radio, SINCGARS has evolved to become a comprehensive voice and data radio, with the SINCGARS waveform found on various airborne and ground assets.
“ITT’s ubiquitous SINCGARS radios not only enhance informational superiority, but also save warfighters’ lives,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst
The latest generation of SINCGARS feature a unique module called “SideHat,” which enables the single channel transceiver to run the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW) on a second, UHF channel. SRW is the networking waveform in which JTRS Handheld, Man-pack and Small Form Fit (HMS) software defined core radios will operate on in the future, providing high-speed high capacity tactical networking between warfighters, sensors, and unmanned systems.
To further solidify SINCGARS’s future growth prospects, ITT recently announced a teaming agreement with General Dynamics C4 Systems, the lead systems integrator for JTRS HMS radios, to develop a SCA-compliant iteration of its SideHat called Small Form Fit-SideHat (SFF-S) for the 250,000-plus SINCGARS already fielded by the Army. The development of SFF-S radios will enable end users to leverage even greater value from existing and future SINCGARS inventories.
“SINCGARS’s interoperability and future relevance with software-defined tactical communications will secure ITT’s position as a leader in the software programmable and software defined radio market well into the future,” notes Ngai. “With a comprehensive range of other interoperable tactical solutions such as Radio Based Combat ID (RBCI) system.”
In short, SINCGARS are and will continue to be a premier tactical radio solution, evolving from generation to generation, especially with new technologies such as SRW that “future proof” it from the threat of obsolescence. In recognition of this unflagging commitment to furthering SINCGARS technology, Frost & Sullivan is honored to present ITT with the 2008 U.S. Military Software Defined Radio Growth Strategy Excellence Award. Each year, this award is presented to a company that has demonstrated excellence in implementing and sustaining growth within shipments, revenues, and profitability.

Lockheed Martin-Developed Systems, Capabilities LED Ballistic Missile Defense Efforts in 2008
January 7, 2009
Lockheed Martin’s unparalleled BMD hit-to-kill intercept record includes 16 successful Aegis BMD intercepts, five successful Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD (TM)) intercepts and 16 successful Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3 (TM)) intercepts since 2001.
“Lockheed Martin-developed weapon system elements and critical technologies continue to protect our great nation and its international allies against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft and other airborne threats,” said
Lockheed Martin’s many operational systems and next-generation capabilities have demonstrated consistent reliability and illustrate the progress being made in support of a strong layered missile defense.
2008 Missile Defense Milestones:
ABL
— In November, the MDA’s Airborne Laser (ABL) team successfully fired the High Energy Laser for the first time through the Lockheed Martin-developed Beam Control/Fire Control System. In ground tests in the ABL aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, the system focused and directed the beam through the aircraft’s conformal window into a range simulator. Further testing of the boost-phase ABL system will culminate in an airborne intercept test against a ballistic missile in 2009.
Aegis
— In January, Lockheed Martin received a
Aegis Open Architecture was installed on USS Bunker Hill as a key component of the Navy’s Cruiser Modernization Program. Using commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware and open system software, the Aegis Open Architecture provides easy integration of technology refreshes and capability upgrades that will keep the technology leading-edge. This milestone in Aegis Open Architecture is part of the development path to merge Aegis Open Architecture and Aegis BMD in 2012, when the Aegis Modernization program begins for the Navy’s 62 Aegis-equipped destroyers.
The Aegis system’s second successful terminal phase endo-atmospheric intercept, in June, set the tone for the test and evaluation of the latest version of Aegis BMD – Aegis
In a one-time emergency mission, Lockheed Martin modified the USS Lake Erie’s Aegis BMD Weapon System to successfully intercept an errant U.S. satellite in the exo-atmosphere in February. The Aegis system prevented the satellite from re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere in an uncontrolled and dangerous manner by guiding an interceptor from the MK 41 Vertical Launching System to the terminal phase of intercept.

SBIRS
— In December, the first Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO-1) payload and ground system, built by a Lockheed Martin team for the U.S. Air Force, was certified for operations by U.S. Strategic Command. The formal certification completed the system development, operational activation and certification process, demonstrating the capability of the SBIRS HEO sensor and associated ground system to provide timely, accurate missile warning data to the Warfighter. SBIRS is designed to provide early warning of missile launches, and simultaneously support other missions including missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness.
Last year the SBIRS team achieved key integration and test milestones on the first geosynchronous orbit (GEO) spacecraft, including a comprehensive acoustic and pyroshock test regimen that validated the overall satellite design, quality of workmanship and survivability during space vehicle launching and on-orbit operations. Thermal vacuum testing of the completed GEO-1 space vehicle, which will validate its performance at temperature extremes greater than those expected during on-orbit operations, is planned for 2009 in preparation for delivery to the U.S. Air Force in fiscal year 2010.
Targets and Countermeasures

Continental Airlines Flight Demonstrates Use of Sustainable Biofuels as Energy Source for Jet Travel
January 7, 2009
“This demonstration flight represents another step in Continental’s ongoing commitment to fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
The biofuel blend includes components derived from algae and jatropha plants, both sustainable, second-generation sources that do not impact food crops or water resources or contribute to deforestation. The algae oil has been provided by Sapphire Energy, and the jatropha oil by Terasol Energy. This is the first time a commercial carrier will power a flight using fuel derived in part from algae.
Continental’s Boeing 737-800, tail number 516, will depart from and return to Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport operating under a specially-issued “Experimental” aircraft type certificate, and will carry no passengers.
During the flight, which will last approximately two hours, Continental test pilots will engage the aircraft in a number of normal and non-normal flight maneuvers, such as mid-flight engine shutdown and re-start, and power accelerations and decelerations. A Continental engineer will record flight data onboard.
The flight will operate with a biofuel blend, which consists of 50 percent biologically-derived fuel and 50 percent traditional jet fuel, in the No. 2 engine. This biofuel blend will result in a significant net decrease in carbon emissions relative to traditional jet fuel, as both jatropha and algae consume carbon during their lifecycles.
The aircraft’s No. 1 engine will operate on 100 percent traditional jet fuel, allowing Continental to compare performance between the biofuel blend and traditional fuel. As Continental has worked with Boeing, GE Aviation/CFM and UOP for more than nine months to carefully evaluate and test the biofuel in engines on the ground, no difference in performance is expected.
The biofuel is a “drop-in” fuel, and no modifications to the aircraft or engine are necessary for the flight to operate. The biofuel meets and exceeds specifications necessary for jet fuel, including a flash point and a freezing point appropriate for use in aircraft.
Following the flight, Continental will participate with its partners in post-flight engine analysis to ensure that the effect on the engine and aircraft, in addition to performance, is substantively no different between biofuel and traditional fuel.
“Through their leadership Continental Airlines is helping aviation pioneer a greener, more diverse fuel supply for the future,” said
“UOP’s goal with renewable technology is to produce real fuels that perform as well as or better than their petroleum-based alternatives and that leverage the existing fuel infrastructure and fleet technology to lower capital costs and simplify adoption,” said General Manager of UOP Renewable Energy and Chemicals Jennifer Holmgren. “With our proven technology and the commitment of aviation leaders like Continental and Boeing, sustainable biofuels for aviation are a real near-term option. We believe that production levels could reach hundreds of millions of gallons per year by 2012.”
“We still have a lot of work to do in terms testing various biofuels but we are very pleased with, and encouraged by, the results we have achieved to date,” said
“The simple combination of sunlight, CO2 and algae to produce a carbon-neutral, renewable fuel source has the potential to profoundly change the petrochemical landscape forever,” said
“We are excited to be pioneering the development of bio-based jet fuels along with Continental Airlines,” said Sanjay Pingle, president, Terasol Energy. “Jatropha is one of several next generation fuel sources that we are working on in order to develop sustainable, scalable and renewable alternatives to petroleum-based products.”
