TAM is reinstating its nonstop Sao Paulo-Cordoba, Argentina service

Brazil’s leading airline announced that it is reinstating its service to Cordoba on March 23. The service was suspended last year. The new service will provide four-time weekly flights with A320 aircraft.
The Dominican Republic to build three new airports

The Director of Airports announced that the government is planning to build three new airports, one in San Juan de la Maguana, another in San Francisco de Macoris and a third, an ecological airport in Bayaguana, which will include a pilot school for aircraft using ethanol.
Routes-OAG announce regional winners of their Airport Marketing Awards

During the Routes Americas forum in Cancun, Routes and OAG presented their Routes- OAG Airport Marketing Awards to the three best airports in the Americas, with Santo Domingo winning the “Best in the Caribbean”, Dallas/Fort Worth “Best in North America” and Quito “Best in South America”. The awards were based on nominations of their preferred airports by the airlines in the region. Congratulations to all three.
Aero Republica, Copa Holding’s Colombian affiliate reports 2008 results

The airline had the highest on time performance in Colombia during 2008, with 82% of its domestic flights operating on time. It carried 365,000 passengers in 2008 and while the domestic industry traffic decreased 2.8% in December, Aero Republica increased its traffic 46% in the month.
Copa Holdings reports net income of $152.2 million in 2008

Panama’s “model airline” has reported net income of $152.2 million in 2008 following a record $51.9 million in the fourth quarter, compared to $35.5 million in the same quarter of 2007. The $152.2 million net income for the year compares to $161.8 million in 2007. Most importantly, the airline reported operating income of $224 million in 2008 with an operating margin of 17.4%, one of the best, if not the best, in the airline industry.
LIAT distances itself from Stanford

LIAT management issued a statement stressing that Sir Allen Stanford has no stake in the regional airline. Mark Darby, LIAT CEO, confirmed that LIAT held talks with the Stanford Financial Group in 2006 and 2007. While no transaction was ever concluded, LIAT did acquire some of the assets of Caribbean Star and Caribbean Sun, two former airlines owned by Sir Allen.
Air Jamaica to sell its two A320s

The carrier’s President and CEO, Bruce Nobles, told Parliament last week that US$135 million is needed to cover the airline’s losses over the next six months as well as to pay transition costs to put the new business plan in place. Selling the only two planes it owns is reportedly one of the things the carrier is working on to generate cash flow.
Boeing delivers first 777 Freighter to Air France

Launch customer, Air France, received the first 777 Freighter from Boeing in a ceremony yesterday. The 777 Freighter can fly 4,880 miles with a full payload of 226,700 pounds. It is the world’s longest-range freighter, features the lowest trip cost of any large freighter, with high cargo density and a 10-foot interior height capability.
GOL and American sign interline agreement

The agreement provides GOL with a new channel of distribution through American’s network in Brazil and other countries. A spokesperson commented that allowing American’s passengers access to GOL’s flight network will increase passenger traffic and load factors on GOL flights as well as generate new revenue. American offers the most seats between the two countries operating 69 weekly flights to and from three US destinations and five Brazilian cities.
Sikorsky S-61 Sagem Glass Cockpit Retrofit Approved for VFR Flight

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to Carson Helicopter Services (HeliExpo 2009 Static #25) for installation of a five display configuration of Sagem Avionics, Inc. (SAFRAN Group) Integrated Cockpit Display System (ICDS) in the modernized Sikorsky S-61 helicopter. The glass panel solution was integrated in Langley, B.C., Canada, by Vector Aerospace (Booth #2922).
The S-61 solution includes four Active Matrix Light Crystal Display (AMLCD) 10-inch displays mounted in portrait mode and one in landscape mode. The system integrates Primary Flight Instruments, EICAS -Engine Instruments/Caution Advisory System and other Multifunction Display system functions such as moving maps, enhanced vision when linked to a camera, TOPS – Terrain Obstacle Proximity System, route information, etc.
This unique installation is part of a modernization program launched by Frank Carson who is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the helicopter industry. “I have been thinking about a glass cockpit for years,” said Carson. “The added situational awareness and reliability, plus the additional capabilities, provide the pilot with a more user-friendly cockpit”. The aim of the program is to create solutions for helicopter operators that enhance safety, part of which is the development of advanced composite main rotor blades.
Over 600 Sikorsky S61 are still in service worldwide under varying nominations such as SH-3 SeaKing. This aircraft accomplishes many missions. It has been used for Cargo, Search and Rescue, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Airborne Early Warning, Wild Fire Fighting, Construction and logging.
