Firm Order Announced for PurePower PW1000G Engines on New Bombardier CSeries Aircraft for Lufthansa Group

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., March 11, 2009 – Pratt & Whitney will provide exclusive power for up to 60 new Bombardier CSeries®* aircraft ordered by Lufthansa Group as part of a contract announced today.  This agreement, which includes 30 firm and 30 option aircraft, follows a Letter of Interest that was announced at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2008.  The Bombardier CSeries aircraft is powered by two PurePowerTM PW1000G engines, which target double digit reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs.  Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
“After watching the development of the Geared Turbofan engine since the very early stages, we are confident that this next generation engine will deliver on its targets of significant reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs,” said Nico Buchholz, Lufthansa senior vice president, Corporate Fleet.  “The efficiency and environmental performance of the Geared Turbofan engine will be real differentiators for us, our customers and the industry. We are pleased to be able to be among the first airlines to fly this engine on the CSeries.”
“Our recently completed ground and flight demonstration program confirmed that our patented Geared Turbofan technology can bring operators 12 to 15 percent engine fuel burn improvements and noise improvements that are more than 20 decibels below today’s target,” said Todd Kallman, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines & Global Services. “Having a firm order from Lufthansa – one of the world’s leading airlines – demonstrates that the PW1000G-powered CSeries is on track to bring step-change advances in commercial aircraft performance to market in four years.”
The announcement marks the second order for the PurePower PW1000G engine, which also powers the Mitsubishi Regional Jet that received its launch order from All Nippon Airways in 2008. Both aircraft are scheduled to enter service in 2013.
