Acceptance by public universities reaches 80%
São José dos Campos, March 20, 2009 – The students of Engineer Juarez Wanderley High
School, created and supported by Embraer through the Embraer Education and Research
Institute (Instituto Embraer de Educação e Pesquisa – IEEP), have set an historic record for the
institution: all 201 graduates were accepted by at least one undergraduate institution, whether
public or private, through the 2009 college entrance exams. Another important indicator, that is
the approval rate at public universities, rose from 64%, in 2008, to 80%, or 160 students passed
some of the most competitive college entrance exams in Brazil.
“I believe that the improved results, which had already been very high in previous years, are
due, first, to the merits of the students who see education as an opportunity for personal
growth, but also, to the professionalism and dedication of the entire high school staff,” says
Pedro Ferraz, Director of the Embraer Education and Research Institute. “Both students and
staff benefit from the availability of a consistent pedagogical project and from the constant
development of dynamic and motivating activities.”
The Engineer Juarez Wanderley High School is located at Embraer’s Eugênio de Melo Unit, in
São José dos Campos, Brazil. Founded in February 2002, it has become a benchmark for quality
instruction, not only in the Paraíba Valley region. It is ranked among the four best schools in the
State of São Paulo and among the top 25 public and private schools in Brazil, according to the
2007 National High School Exam (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio – ENEM).
The institution provides a daily ten–hour schedule for the 600 students in the three-year high school,
with a total of 6,000 class-hours given during the entire instructional cycle. Everyone receives
instruction, on-site meals, uniform, transportation, and educational materials free of charge.
Besides the top-quality academic curriculum and the extracurricular environmental, social,
and cultural activities, the high school offers students an 800-hour University Preparation
Program, which is divided among the areas of the sciences (Pre-engineering), humanities
(Pre-administration), and medical research (Pre-biomedical). These are developed in
partnerships with the Center of Occupational Research and Development (CORD), from the
United States, Rede Pitágoras, and Sírio-Libanês Hospital, respectively.
The students of Engineer Juarez Wanderley High School are selected by an entrance exam and, to
be eligible, they must have taken the previous four years of studies (equivalent to middle school in
the U.S.) in the public school system. The competition is stiff, with a ratio of as many as 25 candidates per opening.

projects, focusing on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and public schools.
Investments are also made in qualifying special needs young adults (in partnership with the
City of São José dos Campos), preparing low-income students for college entrance exams (in
Gavião Peixoto, in partnership with the University of the State of São Paulo – UNESP), and
entrepreneurship (in partnership with the Junior Achievement, in all three regions).
