Cessna Gains International Certifications for Citations
March 12, 2009
WICHITA, Kan., March 12, 2009 Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced today it has gained several international certifications for various Citation models, opening new markets for the world’s most popular line of business jets.
The Citation Mustang gained certification this month in China and the Isle of Mann (UK). The Citation XLS+ gained European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification, and the Citation X gained certification in Nigeria. No details were released regarding near-term deliveries to these countries.
“The entry into service for the Citation Mustang has been nothing short of phenomenal, and interest from the market continues to grow,” said Roger Whyte, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Cessna. “We are excited about offering the Mustang in China.”
The Citation Mustang is now certified in 57 countries including the United States.
The XLS+, the latest version of the popular Excel/XLS line, has received full type certification from EASA.
“The Excel/XLS/XLS+ product line continues to be very popular with nearly 150 registered in Europe,” said Whyte. “The XLS+ can fly non-stop anywhere in western Europe making it very attractive for business and charter operations.”
Earlier this month, the Citation X received type certification in Nigeria. The Citation X is the world’s fastest civilian aircraft with a top cruising speed of 525 knots / 972 km/hr (Mach 0.92). There are more than 300 Citation Xs in service worldwide.
Lufthansa Expands CFM56-5B-Powered Airbus Fleet; Places $375 Million Engine Order
March 12, 2009
EVENDALE, Ohio — February 18, 2009 — Lufthansa has selected CFM International’s CFM56-5B engine to power 27 new Airbus A319/A320 aircraft in a firm engine order valued at approximately $375 million. The airline is scheduled to take its first new aircraft later this year, with deliveries continuing through November 2012.
Lufthansa took delivery of its first CFM-powered aircraft in 1986 and today operates more than 150 CFM56-powered Airbus and Boeing aircraft.
Lufthansa, the national carrier of Germany, is one of the world’s most prestigious airlines. Since it’s foundation, Lufthansa has been a driving force behind commercial aviation. In recent years, the airline has been one of the industry’s strongest proponents of “green” technology that reduces the impact of aviation on the environment, particularly noise and emissions.
By selecting the CFM56-5B Tech Insertion configuration, Lufthansa is taking a significant step in further achieving those goals. Over the engine’s life cycle, CFM56 Tech Insertion will provide the airline better specific fuel consumption, which translates to better fuel burn and, as a result, lower CO2 emissions. The engine also meets the new International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Committee of Aviation Environmental Protection standards (CAEP /6) that took effect in early 2008.
Tech Insertion will also result in longer time on wing through an equivalent 15 – 20° C additional exhaust gas temperature margin; between 5 and 15% percent lower maintenance costs (depending on the thrust rating) through enhanced durability. These benefits are achieved through improvements to the high-pressure compressor, the combustor, and the high- and low-pressure turbines.
CFM56-5B engines are a product of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (SAFRAN Group) and General Electric Company.

The company announced today that its CDMS-3000 display has been selected for the future ATR-42 and ATR-72 regional passenger aircraft. The next generation ATR cockpits will be equipped with a brand-new Thales TopDeck avionics suite, each including two Barco CDMS-3000 units.
“We are very proud to have been selected for this forward-fit cockpit project,” commented Yves Vanhauwaert, General Manager of Barco’s avionics business. “It is a recognition of our leading avionics display offering, as well as our unique position in the industry as an independent display provider.”
“Barco CDMS-3000 control display units are valued by the industry for their flexibility and excellent performance in general and their high-grade optical performance in particular. Integrated into the flexible Thales TopDeck flight deck, our units will bring the best of today’s avionics display technology to the ATR-42 and ART-72 cockpits,” Vanhauwaert continued.
The CDMS-3000 is the successor of Barco’s widely-used CDMS series. Featuring the latest display technology, it combines excellent sunlight-readability with compact dimensions, low weight and optimum energy efficiency. The CDMS-3000 comes as a complete, ETSO-C113 certified product line, including both civil and military-oriented versions. FreeFlight Systems Introduces RAD-40 Radar Altimeter Display
March 12, 2009
A Critical Instrument for Pilots Flying in Task-Saturated Situations
WACO, Texas, March 12 /PRNewswire/ — FreeFlight Systems, a global supplier of high criticality avionics systems, announces the introduction of a new radar altimeter display, the RAD-40. The RAD-40, a panel-mount digital display, provides the pilot with a precise readout of the aircraft’s height above ground level on a bright LED readout. Moreover, this new display includes a pilot-selectable Decision Height (DH) and five additional trip points (from 100 – 1000 feet), all with discrete outputs designed to control an audible tone or interface to third party equipment.
The RAD-40 is compatible with FreeFlight Systems’ TSO-certified RA-4000 and RA-4500 Radar Altimeters. The RA-4500, with an ARINC 429 interface, and the RA-4000 are high integrity, professional grade radar altimeters designed to enhance operational safety during approaches, nighttime operations, and flights above hazardous terrain.
“When flying in degraded weather conditions, pilots find themselves in task-saturated situations which is why we designed the RAD-40 to be clear, bright, and easy to read with reliable warnings when both decision height and pre-set warning altitudes are met,” states Robert Schneier, COO, FreeFlight Systems. “When pilots are ‘in the weeds,’ that is low to the ground, they are looking outside because the weather is bad or they are fixating on a landing zone. In this situation our RAD-40, combined with either the RA-4000 or RA-4500, could very well be the last — and only — thing that keeps them from hitting the ground,” adds Tim Taylor, president and CEO, FreeFlight Systems. “We take that responsibility very seriously when designing our systems.”
In addition to the standard version, a Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible display is available. For certain installations, a display mounted in a round faceplate adapter is also offered as an option.
The RAD-40 is available at a retail price of $2,525 when purchased with an RA-4500 or RA-4000 and $2,995 when purchased separately. TSO certification is expected in mid-March, with delivery in late March 2009.

EADS North America Begins Deliveries of UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters to the District of Columbia National Guard
March 12, 2009
The New Rotary-Wing Aircraft Are Configured for Multi-Mission Duties, Including Medical Evacuation
WASHINGTON, DC–(Marketwire – March 12, 2009) – EADS North America today delivered the initial three UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopters to the District of Columbia National Guard, providing new-generation aircraft for a range of aviation support missions in the nation’s capital area.
These helicopters were accepted during a ceremony at the Washington, D.C. Armory, and are the first of 16 Lakotas to be operated in the region. The D.C. National Guard will receive a total of eight UH-72As, with a similar number assigned to the Military District of Washington. All 16 will be based at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, and are capable of operating from this Army facility as well as from the Washington, D.C. Armory.
“We’re extremely proud of every UH-72A Lakota we deliver to the U.S. Army, but it will be especially rewarding to see our aircraft supporting the men and women who protect our nation’s capital,” said Ralph D. Crosby, Jr., EADS North America’s chairman and CEO. “The Lakota is the most capable light utility helicopter in the world today — built here in the United States, and being delivered on time, on budget and on performance.”
The UH-72A is based on Eurocopter’s EC-145 multi-role helicopter. As part of EADS North America’s expansion of the company’s U.S. industrial presence, a full-scale Lakota production capability has been established at the Columbus, Miss. facility of its American Eurocopter business unit — generating high-value jobs in the United States.
The D.C. National Guard Lakotas are multi-mission aircraft with provisions for medical evacuation — providing the capability to carry NATO-standard litters.
“These new aircraft will greatly enhance our ability to fulfill our mission in the nation’s capital,” said Army Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard. “Aviation assets like the UH-72A provide increased capability and flexibility across a wide variety of mission requirements as we support and protect both the residents and government functions in the District.”
EADS North America is supplying the Lakota under U.S. Army contract, with 128 aircraft currently on order and more than 50 delivered to date to Army and National Guard units. Nearly 10,000 flight hours have been logged by UH-72As in service from bases across the country — including the Eastern Army National Guard Aviation Training Site in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa.; Fort Eustis and Fort Belvoir, Va.; Fort Polk, La.; Fort Irwin, Calif.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Morrisville, N.C.; Pineville, La.; Tupelo, Miss.; and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
The Army expects to acquire a total of 345 Lakotas through 2016 for use on missions that vary from homeland security and medical evacuation to drug interdiction, support and logistics operations. Additionally, five Light Utility Helicopters have been ordered by the U.S. Navy for pilot training at the Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Md.
UH-72A U.S. production averages three to four helicopters per month — with the capability of reaching five aircraft monthly at the Columbus production site. This state-of-the-art installation is a 220,000 sq. ft. addition to American Eurocopter’s Mississippi rotary-wing aircraft center of excellence, which is located adjacent to the Golden Triangle Regional Airport. The facility has met its goal of creating new job opportunities in the region, with total employment planned to surpass 200 as the UH-72A program reaches its full production and final assembly capability.
