The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) reported that its member airlines carried 8.7 million passengers in February, down 3.5% from the same month last year. At the same time it reported that in the first two months of 2009, its member airlines carried 19.3 million passengers for a growth of 1.4% over the same two months in 2008. While the total in February was down across the board, it is interesting and worth noting that passenger traffic within Latin America had the least decline with 1.8 million passengers down 1.5%. Europe traffic had the greatest decline down 12%, and North America was down 2.7%. For the year-to-date, Latin American traffic was up 1.9% with domestic actually up 3% with 12.6 million passengers. Total Intra-Latin American traffic for the two months was up 2.7% with 16.6 million passengers.
