EAST HARTFORD, Conn., April 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Alan Epstein, Pratt & Whitney vice president, Technology & Environment, has testified before the House committee on Space and Aviation’s subcommittee on Science and Technology that development of sustainable biojet fuels is one of the most promising avenues for aviation to reduce its impact on climate change. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.

“Pratt & Whitney is bullish on biojet fuel for aviation. Simply put, drop-in, sustainable aviation biojet fuels are an excellent idea,” Epstein told subcommittee members on March 26. “They will reduce aviation’s CO2, while diversifying our fuel supply and promoting energy independence. Combined with continuing technical innovation in aircraft and engines, we see sustainable biojet fuels as enabling the growth in civil aviation that is critical to the nation’s and the world’s economic growth.”

Pratt & Whitney is a leader in the development, testing and certification of alternative jet fuels and has been working with industry groups, customers and aircraft manufacturers to explore alternative fuel options that improve fuel supplies and reduce environmental emissions. In 2009, Pratt & Whitney, Japan Airlines and Boeing completed a successful flight test of a second generation bio fuel on a Pratt & Whitney-powered 747 aircraft. Pratt & Whitney Canada is also working with industry experts to develop and test alternative fuels for general aviation, business jets and the Virgin Galactic spaceship program.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and commercial building industries.
