Brazilian Air Force receives this advanced training and light attack airplane
São José dos Campos, May 26, 2009 –
Embraer delivered the 100th Super Tucano aircraft, today, at the Company’s
headquarters in São José dos Campos, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The Brazilian Air Force
(Força Aérea Brasileira – FAB) established the technical-operational requisites for this
advanced turboprop, designated as the A-29 by the FAB, which has ordered 99 aircraft,
and now receives this commemorative unit.
“We are proud to deliver the 100th aircraft specifically to the FAB, which was the first to operate
the Super Tucano,” said Orlando José Ferreira Neto, Embraer Executive Vice President, Defense
Market. “The FAB’s ability to establish challenging requisites that reflect real operating
conditions was of paramount importance to our development of such a successful airplane. As a
result, the Super Tucano offers the market’s best solution for more efficient tactical training, and
the best operational adaptation, by incorporating leading edge technologies.”
Out of a total of 169 units sold, so far, Embraer has orders from the Air Forces of Chile, the
Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. The Super Tucano currently operates successfully with the
Brazilian and Colombian Air Forces on air space surveillance and operational missions.
The Super Tucano, in its single- and two-seat versions, entered service with the FAB in
December 2003, to be used both to train pilots and to fly operational missions. This flexibility
makes the Super Tucano the only aircraft in production, in the world, that is capable of handling
advanced pilot training, surveillance, and counter-insurgency missions, including at night, with
the aid of night-vision goggles, and electro-optical and infra-red sensors. It also operates on
rustic airfields and with a wide variety of qualified external load configurations.

Mitsubishi on target for 2013 delivery of first MRJ

May 22, 2009

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. is on schedule to deliver the first MRJ90 by 2013 to launch customer ANA, which has firm orders for 25, Executive VP Junichi Mizakawi said at the Regional Airline Assn. conference in Salt Lake City.

The company completed its preliminary design review in April with critical review scheduled to be finished by year end. First flight is anticipated in 2011.

Mizakawi said Mitsubishi, which is offering a 70-seat MRJ70 along with the 90-seat model, remains committed to both types. This week, Sukhoi International said it likely would not move ahead with its 75-seat Superjet owing to scant market interest. Mitsubishi will be able to offer a stretch version up to 112 seats but not beyond, Mizakawi said: “That product won’t go to the 120-seat range.”

The MRJ70s/90s are targeted at specific markets for growth or replacement of 50-seat RJs or older Fokker and BAe 146 aircraft, he said. A cabin mockup complete with newly engineered, lightweight seating is on display at the RAA event.

Commenting on selection of the PW1000G engine for the MRJ, Mizakawi said, “It was a very tough decision for us to make. We had good proposals from every engine company.”

Fault on Embraer 170 leads to actuator redesign

May 22, 2009

Actuators used to move the wing slats on Embraer 170s have been redesigned as a consequence of a fault discovered by airline operators in Australia and overseas.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) says in a statement that since the fault has been discovered the slat actuator manufacturer has initiated a redesign of the actuator “to reduce torque trip and limiter engagement”.

Meanwhile, “the aircraft manufacturer has issued a new fault isolation task to address the fault and stop recurrence, it says.

The ATSB and Australian carrier Virgin Blue discovered the fault last year.

The bureau says on 10 August a Virgin Blue E-170, local registration VH-ZHA, was operating from Sydney to Melbourne with six crew and 54 passengers on board.

“During the approach into Melbourne, the flight crew selected the flaps to ‘flaps 1’ [but] when the selection was made, a number of caution messages including ‘slat fail’, ‘spoiler fault’, ‘aircraft operating angle of attack limit fail’ and ‘shaker anticipated’ appeared.”

“The flaps were cycled up and down, again with the caution messages reappearing.”

It says the pilots eventually landed the aircraft and an examination on the ground by the airline’s engineers “identified a slat jammed/under speed fault.”

“The appropriate fault isolation manual task was completed and it was found that the left side number-3 slat actuator torque trip limiter had actuated.”

The documentation “revealed that this usually occurs when the slats are operated in extremely cold conditions”.

It adds, the airline operator then contacted another E-170 operator overseas, that uses E-170s in cold climates, and that overseas operator “informed the operator of VH-ZHA that they experienced slat/flap failures weekly and at times daily.”

Air France e Delta fazem joint venture

May 22, 2009

Além disso, a parceria terá receita superior a US$ 12 bilhões.

Embraer sells 20 E190s to Argentine state carrier

May 22, 2009

Embraer is selling 20 E190 jets to Argentine carrier Austral Lineas Aereas for $700 million – marking the first time E-jets will operate in the country.

Brazilian state bank BNDES is financing 85% of the purchase. The first jet will be delivered in the first half of 2010.

Austral is a subsidiary of Aerolineas Argentinas, Argentina’s state carrier, which was nationalised last year owing to problems over cancellations and strikes.  Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said the deal restored some national pride. Prior to yesterday’s deal with Embraer, the airline had not bought any aircraft for 16 years.

“We are very proud to premier our E-jets in Argentina and participate in the renovation of the fleet of this internationally renowned airline,” said Embraer executive vice president, airline market Mauro Kern.

The jets will be the AR (advanced range), with a range of up 2,400 nautical miles.

Austral will use the aircraft to expand its domestic footprint and to potentially open new markets in South America.

The deal comes as Embraer and the Argentine government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in support of the development of Area Material Corboda (AMC) for the purpose of supplying services and parts for Embraer aircraft.

Embraer’s first quarter profits plunged by 75% and in March the Brazilian manufacturer revised down its delivery estimate for 2009 and said it will cut 20% of its global workforce. Embraer said the deal with Austral will help with efforts to minimise job cuts.

Recently published figures from IATA show that the market for business jets continues to suffer amid the global recession.

May 22, 2009
