Industry and Government Leaders to Explore Future of Commercial Space Transportation of Crew and Cargo

June 10, 2009

RESTON, Va., June 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Industry and government leaders will meet on June 18 to explore the promising future of commercial space transportation — of humans as well as cargo — in meeting government and private sector needs in low Earth orbit.

The special half-day event, “Innovations in Orbit: An Exploration of Commercial Crew and Cargo Transportation,” will feature panelists and speakers from NASA, the FAA, and the private sector, discussing a broad array of innovative commercial space transportation concepts. Organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the discussion is free and open to the public, and takes place on Thursday, June 18, at 1:00 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, Capitol Room A, Lobby Level, 400 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

After welcoming remarks by Klaus Dannenberg, AIAA’s deputy executive director, an industry panel will be moderated by aerospace consultant Patti Grace Smith, a former FAA Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation. Featured panelists include: Mike Gold, director of the Washington, D.C. area office of Bigelow Aerospace; George Sowers, vice president for business development and advanced programs at the United Launch Alliance; Max Vozoff, director of civil business development for Space Exploration Technologies; and Frank L. Culbertson, senior vice president for human space programs at Orbital Sciences Corporation.

A government panel will follow, moderated by Michael Beavin, senior program analyst at the Department of Commerce Office of Space Commercialization. Featured panelists include: Valin Thorn, deputy program manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew & Cargo Program; Ken Davidian, the “Encourage, Facilitate, and Promote” program lead at the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation; Chan Lieu, senior professional staff member at the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and Jeff Bingham, senior advisor on space and aeronautics for the minority, U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Closing remarks will be made by Charles Miller, senior advisor for commercial space in NASA’s Innovative Partnerships Program.

AIAA President David Thompson stated, “This gathering provides an important opportunity to discuss the future of commercial and government interaction in space. As commercial firms and government agencies increase their use of space, it is critical that we examine the needs of both enterprises, and the designs for commercial crew sustainment and cargo transportation systems to meet those needs. This gathering will give attendees a comprehensive look at those needs and the systems which will meet them.”

DeTect: Bird Radars are Ready to Make our Skies Safer

June 9, 2009

FAA Needs to Deploy the Technology Today – Bird Radars to be Focus of NTSB Hearing on Hudson Birdstrike Crash.

PANAMA CITY, Fla., June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/Bird Radar industry leader DeTect today called on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve aviation safety by deploying commercially-available bird radar systems to our nation’s airports.

“Bird radars from DeTect and other firms are available and in use in the U.S. and overseas,” said Gary W. Andrews, CEO of DeTect. “Our military already uses the technology, NASA uses bird radars, it is time to let our commercial airports use the systems.”

In advance of Tuesday’s National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hearing on US Airways flight 1549 bird-related crash, the company has released an updated Bird Radar Fact Sheet.

Mr. Andrews said that, “Ongoing statements by the FAA and other bird radar developers that bird radars are not ready for operational use, will take years more research and could not have prevented the US Airways birdstrike related crash, simply are not correct. Bird radars currently operating regularly detect and track flocks of geese at ranges far beyond the 3 miles distance and 2800 feet altitude as was the flock that brought down flight 1549. These systems are already being used operationally to provide risk advisories to controllers and pilots.”

To date, the FAA has spent two years and several million in taxpayer dollars “evaluating” only one Canadian-made experimental bird radar that its developer recently stated would have been unable to provide accurate avoidance guidance to US Airways Flight 1549, since at 2,800 feet and three miles from La Guardia the geese it struck were too far away (AINonline, Birdstrike Warning Systems Not Quite Ready Yet, June 4, 2009).

“I am sorry that their system cannot detect birds very far away or very reliably, but our US developed and manufactured MERLIN Aircraft Birdstrike Avoidance Radar can and regularly does so for our users, reliably detecting and tracking geese flocks as far away as 8 miles,” said Mr. Andrews in response.

“MERLIN was privately developed and we have systems that have been successfully operating since 2003 with a record of reducing birdstrikes and improving pilot and passenger safety,” he said.

DeTect’s MERLIN system is the most widely used bird radar available with more operational installations than all other manufacturers combined. DeTect has over 45 of its MERLIN Avian Radar Systems in operation worldwide which includes systems used for operational birdstrike risk detection, tracking and alerting at commercial airports, military airfields and space launch facilities, with real-time bird activity displays used by airfield managers, bird control staff and air traffic controllers. The US Air Force has purchased six MERLIN systems to date based on a record of exceptional performance and improved flight safety and NASA uses the MERLIN system for detection, tracking and warning of hazardous bird activity for launch of the $2 billion space shuttle.

“The MERLIN technology is proven and can be integrated immediately into commercial airport operations to better protect aircraft, pilots and the flying public,” Mr. Andrews concluded.

About DeTect

DeTect specializes in remote sensing technologies and systems for aviation safety, security surveillance, environmental management and wind measurement with projects worldwide. The company is a closely-held U.S. corporation headquartered in Panama City, Florida, USA with divisional offices in the U.S. and Canada and representative offices in over 80 countries worldwide (www.detect-inc.com).
