Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies Adds Another Designation as Engine
Alliance Announces a New Member of the GP7200 MRO Network
Dubai, UAE; June 18, 2009: Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies and Engine
Alliance today announced an agreement that will make the Mubadala
Development Company affiliate a member of the Engine Alliance
maintenance, repair and overhaul network provider for the GP7200
engines.
Having this capability in Abu Dhabi offers a significant benefit to
prospective GP7200 operators in the Middle East, who will have
convenient access to an Engine Alliance-branded, full-service repair and
overhaul shop in the region. The Middle East is already the largest
contributor to the GP7200 production backlog..
“As we implement our new growth strategy, we are looking to expand our
product portfolio and build it around next-generation products and
technologies that reinforce our position as the Middle East’s foremost
independent aviation technical services provider,” said John Byers, CEO,
Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies.
John continued, “Providing GP7200 capability at Abu Dhabi Aircraft
Technologies is perfectly aligned with our strategy. Engine Alliance is
a long-term partner with a strong regional customer base and a leading
product that is derived from GE’s and Pratt & Whitney’s latest and best
propulsion technologies.”
“We are thrilled to have this agreement with Abu Dhabi Aircraft
Technologies to cooperate on GP7200 engine MRO activity in this vitally
important part of the world,” said Engine Alliance President Jim
Moravecek.
The two companies expect to finalise the transaction by the third
quarter of 2009, and will start to work together immediately thereafter
to get the Abu Dhabi facility fully certified and operational by 2012.
Aigle Azur Orders CFM56-5B to Power Airbus A319
June 18, 2009
LE BOURGET, France — June 18, 2009 — Aigle Azur has selected the CFM56-5B engine to power a new Airbus A319 aircraft scheduled for delivery in mid-2010.
Aigle Azur, based in Paris, France, operates domestic scheduled passenger services and international services to Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia in North Africa as well as Portugal and Mali. It also operates charter, cargo and wet lease services. The airline has been a CFM customer since 2001, and operates a total of 11 CFM56-5B-powered Airbus A319, A320, and A321 aircraft.
“To equip our future acquisition, an Airbus A319, our choice turned to the CFM56 because of its technical qualities, as well as its fuel consumption and emission performance,” said . “As part of a modernization program and in order to harmonize our fleet, the CFM56-5B will become the only motor of the eleven Aigle Azur aircraft, by the end of 2010.”
Selecting the CFM56-5B Tech Insertion configuration will help Aigle Azur reducing its operating costs. Over the engine’s life cycle, CFM56 Tech Insertion will provide the airline better specific fuel consumption, which translates to better fuel burn and, as a result, lower CO2 emissions. The engine also meets the new International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Committee of Aviation Environmental Protection standards (CAEP /6) that took effect in early 2008.
Tech Insertion will also result in longer time on wing through an equivalent 15 – 20° C additional exhaust gas temperature margin; between 5 and 15% percent lower maintenance costs (depending on the thrust rating) through enhanced durability. These benefits are achieved through improvements to the high-pressure compressor, the combustor, and the high- and low-pressure turbines.
CFM56-5B engines are a product of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (SAFRAN Group) and General Electric Company.

Thales and Liebherr to form partnership for on-board Power Optimized Architectures
June 18, 2009
Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to create a partnership covering a range of business and
research initiatives within the field of Power Optimized Aircraft.
Liebherr and Thales will drive a first joint innovative R&T program called “GETI”* which will be cofunded
by the French Aviation Authority (SDCA). This initiative is launched in the framework of new
generation aircraft.
Thales and Liebherr, as tier 1 suppliers, have a joint ambition for supporting airframers within
“Power Optimized Aircraft” architectures by delivering innovative solutions for the technology
development of greener aircraft.
Jean-Marc Alias, Head of Electrical Systems activities for Thales aerospace said, “With Liebherr
Aerospace we have the same understanding of our customers’ key requirements. Our technology
developments which include the On-Board Power Management Centres are driven by the costeffective
solutions we deliver to our customers and end-users.”
“By bringing together our specific competencies we are able to strengthen our powers of innovation
in order to optimize the transformation of pneumatic systems into a more electrical system”,
explained André Benhamou Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse President. “We are taking onboard the
challenge of the Power Optimized Aircraft which is a nose-to-tail systems optimization of on-board
power architecture. This is an important step, since it enables benefits in terms of weight savings
and reliability improvements”, he added.
The partnership has an open approach to breakthrough innovation in the optimization and
application of technology. This approach is totally consistent with the recently published CORAC**
and ACARE*** road map.
The alliance’s ambition is both to support airframers at the earliest stages of aircraft conception
phase and also to federate other partners
