Calderon: Mexico’s recession ending as tourism recovers

July 9, 2009

Is the headline in an article in the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor which reports on President Felipe Calderon’s comments earlier last week at a conference in Mexico City. He stated that foreign tourism has returned to last year’s levels and hotel occupancy has almost recovered after the swine flu outbreak in April and May shook the industry. Mexican Finance Minister, Agustin Carstens, also stated at the same event, as reported by Bloomberg News, that gross domestic product could grow nearly 3 percent next year thanks to a recovery in the global economy, after plummeting 6 percent this year. Wall Street analysts suggest that Mexico’s mid-term elections, which dealt a blow to the ruling PAN party, will have some implications for pending legislation that affects the country’s economic outlook, but that the results at the polls did not necessarily derail the reform agenda.

System passenger traffic for June increased 9.3% as capacity rose 9.1%. As a result, the Company’s load factor increased 0.1 points to 72.0%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 71% of total passenger traffic.

Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador rose 25.9% as capacity increased 31.2%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the month decreased 2.9 points to 68.8%.

International passenger traffic for June rose 3.7% as capacity increased 1.6%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month increased 1.5 points to 73.3%. International capacity was mainly driven by an increase in operations on regional routes, as well as routes to Europe and the United States, partially offset by certain capacity adjustments on routes to Mexico.

In line with the decrease in global import and export markets, during the month of June cargo traffic decreased 16.2%. This decrease was mainly due to a slowdown in import and export markets in Latin America. In line with the decrease in demand, capacity fell 9.4%, mainly through the reduction of ACMI leases, generating a 5.3 point decrease in the load factor to 66.3%.

During June, 92.8% of the Company’s total flights left on time based on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as “on-time”). This represented an increase of 5.8 points compared to June 2008.

July 9, 2009

Airbus Military Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) has confirmed its superior night time ability to refuel receivers.
As part of the readiness for A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) qualification, the ARBS, mounted on Airbus Military’s own A310 boom demonstrator, was used recently on a night mission to perform a series of contacts with an F-16AM aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force as a receiver. After approach maneuvers to calibrate illumination, 17 contacts were made between the A310 and the receiver. The ARBS operator performed the refueling operation using the new Airbus Military state of the art Boom Enhanced Vision System featuring laser infrared lighting and high definition digital stereoscopic video system. The ARBS has now accumulated more than 400 contacts with different types of aircraft: F-16, E-3F AWACS, and KC-30A MRTT.
The Airbus Military A330 MRTT is the most capable new generation tanker available today and has recently successfully performed contacts using its new generation hose and drogue refueling pods. The A330 MRTT has also performed as a receiver with the Airbus Military A310 Boom Demonstrator and a French Air Force C-135FR tanker.
Follow on activities will include more contacts with the new hose and drogue refueling pod and the advanced Aerial Refueling Boom System (ARBS), refueling a variety of receivers that will include French, Portuguese and Spanish small and large receiver aircraft. This flight test phase will lead to the completion of military certification, and final qualification with our customer.
The A330 MRTT has been selected by the air forces of Australia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and was chosen last year by the U.S. Air Force for its recapitalization of the service’s aging tanker fleet.
