Sikorsky Aircraft Begins Testing of Active Rotor System to Improve Helicopter Performance

August 27, 2009

STRATFORD, Conn., Aug. 26, 2009 – As part of an effort to improve helicopter performance, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. has begun whirl testing a demonstration rotor system with active flaps.  The effort is jointly funded by Sikorsky and the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD). Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

“We have reached full speed of 450 rpm and commenced testing flap integrity and functionality,” said Jim Kagdis, program manager for Sikorsky Advanced Programs. “Now we will investigate rotor reconfiguration capabilities to demonstrate the potential to reduce rotor vibration and noise, and increase blade loading, which enables higher maneuverability and speed.”

Testing is expected to continue through the month of August. Wind tunnel testing at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is planned in 2010.

“The beginning of active rotor program testing is evidence of Sikorsky’s commitment to design, develop, test, and to ultimately field next-generation technologies that will advance the current state of rotorcraft,” said Mark Miller, Vice President, Research & Engineering. “We are on a path to prove the concept of configuring a helicopter’s dynamic system to maximize aircraft performance, reduce noise and lower vibration while enhancing overall mission effectiveness.  It is another giant step toward meeting future needs and customer expectations.”

Development partners on the project are United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) for the blades and Hamilton Sundstrand Claverham for the flap actuators.

Avidyne and Key Dealers Deliver First Cirrus “G3-R9” Aircraft

August 27, 2009

ustomers traded in their old Cirrus for low-time, late-model Cirrus aircraft with Entegra Release 9 to get “Best Aircraft, Best Engine, Best Avionics, and Best Value.”

Lincoln, MA, August 26, 2009–– Avidyne Corporation, a leading provider of integrated flight deck and safety systems for general aviation aircraft announced today that Leading Edge Aviation Services of Tampa, and Lone Mountain Aviation of North Las Vegas, have each delivered their first “G3-R9” aircraft.  “G3-R9” is a program launched by Avidyne and its key dealers that provides late-model Cirrus SR22 aircraft for sale with Avidyne’s new Entegra Release 9 Integrated Flight Deck (IFD) system already retrofitted.”

“With G3-R9, customers looking to upgrade their high-time Cirrus aircraft now have the option of purchasing a very low-time, late-model Cirrus from these key Cirrus sales and maintenance centers that also have Entegra Release 9 retrofit expertise,” said Rob Higby, Vice President  of Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service for Avidyne.  “Both of these customers appreciated the value proposition provided by the G3-R9 program and are now flying the “Best Aircraft, Best Engine, Best Avionics, and Best Value.”

“Since I first saw it, I was a big believer in the Entegra Release 9 system, and I initially considered upgrading my 2003 Cirrus, which I have flown for the past five years,” said G3-R9 customer Robert Miller. “With used aircraft prices being what they are and the current tax advantages associated with making the purchase, I saw this as a great opportunity to move up to a G3 Cirrus with the new wing, air conditioning, improved performance, and very low time engine, and the guys at Lone Mountain found me a great airplane and did the retrofit of Release 9 before I took delivery.”

“The G3-R9 program was a great option for me and I couldn’t be happier,” said G3-R9 customer T.J. Shembekar. “Leading Edge found me a low-time G3 Cirrus aircraft and with the addition of Entegra Release 9, I now have an aircraft that is much more capable at a price that was easily a hundred thousand less than buying new.”

Lockheed Martin Airborne Intelligence Test-Bed Completes Maiden Flight; Receives FAA Certification

August 25, 2009

Flying Laboratory Will Accelerate Delivery of C4ISR Capabilities

DENVER, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ — Warfighters will receive critical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities sooner, now that the airborne test-bed developed by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has received its Experimental Airworthiness Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration. This Airborne Multi-Intelligence Laboratory (AML) will be used to tailor advanced sensor combinations to resolve specific military, strategic intelligence and homeland security mission needs.

“We’ve designed the AML so that we can easily test a myriad of sensors to advance the science and art of correlating diverse types of intelligence — with the goal of rapidly providing high-quality data,” said Jim Quinn, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services-Defense’s vice president of C4ISR Systems.

A reconfigured Gulfstream III business jet, this multi-INT test-bed will be used for the development of new sensors and processing capabilities for both Lockheed Martin and its customers to expedite the flow of C4ISR capability to warfighters in theater.

A wide array of features on board the aircraft will facilitate this experimentation, including a computing capability that supports most commercial operating systems, a radome on the belly of the aircraft with ample volume for a range of sensors, and four workstations. In addition, the AML can process data both onboard and on the ground to accommodate a variety of experiments. While the AML is equipped with a robust suite of sensors as well as wideband and narrowband data links, the intent is to rotate sensors as necessary to answer specific requirements. To achieve that goal, the AML incorporates an easily reconfigurable architecture designed to allow different sensors and equipment to be rapidly integrated into the aircraft’s mission systems.

This architecture also allows for future testing of innovative techniques for multi-INT mission planning, intelligence gathering, processing, exploitation and dissemination for a wide variety of missions across the spectrum of operations. Near-term experimentation includes participation in the U.S. Army’s upcoming C4ISR On-the-Move exercise, slated for the end of August at Fort Dix, N.J.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2008 sales of $42.7 billion.
