Fuselage Test Barrel for Bombardier CSeries Aircraft Arrives

August 25, 2009

– A series of wind tunnel testing of CS100 and CS300 aircraft configurations completed

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 24, 2009) – The first test article, a fuselage test barrel, for the new CSeries single-aisle aircraft, has been delivered to Bombardier’s Saint-Laurent, Quebec facility. The test barrel is representative of the main fuselage section of the upcoming CSeries aircraft. Its production and testing will demonstrate the manufacturing and engineering structural concepts before the aircraft’s final design phase begins in 2010. The CSeries aircraft’s entry into service is scheduled for 2013.

The test barrel, which measures approximately 23 feet (7 m) long and has a maximum diameter of approximately 12 feet (3.7 m), is made of advanced aluminum alloys. These materials have been selected to provide weight and maintenance advantages for CSeries jetliner operators.

Built by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, a unit of China Aviation Industry, the test barrel left Dalian, China on July 20, 2009, traveled across the Pacific and then 2,500 miles from California to Quebec.

Just over 10 per cent of the CSeries aircraft will be manufactured in China by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. Shenyang also supplies the empennage, as well as the aft and forward fuselage sections for Bombardier’s high-speed Q400 turboprop airliner.

“The test barrel for the CSeries aircraft arrived on schedule, and meets the quality standards equivalent to a final production unit. This achievement underscores the strength of our partnership with Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and China Aviation industry,” said Robert Dewar, Vice President, Integrated Product Development Team, CSeries Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “This partnership is an integral part of our commitment to building a long-term investment and strategic industrial relationship with China.”

Another recent achievement for the CSeries aircraft program included the completion of a series of wind tunnel tests covering high speed, low speed and high lift. These tests were carried out at various facilities including, ONERA F1 (France, Toulouse), ETW (Cologne, Germany) and ARA (Bedford, UK). The tests were completed on schedule and have confirmed CSeries aircraft overall performance benefits.

Bombardier’s competitive 110-seat and 130-seat CSeries aircraft will benefit from the latest technological advancements, including: fourth generation aerodynamics; increased use of composites and advanced aluminium alloys in structures; a next-generation engine – the Pratt & Whitney PurePowerTM PW1000G engine; and the very latest in system technologies, such as fly-by-wire and electric brakes. Designed specifically for comfort, the CSeries airliners will set new standards in fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Engine Alliance Celebrates One Year of Reliable Service

August 25, 2009

EAST HARTFORD, CT – August 24, 2009 – The Engine Alliance’s GP7200 engine has marked a successful first year in service with Emirates. Since entering service in August 2008, the GP7200-powered Airbus A380 has had no in-flight shutdowns, and the engine has demonstrated a departure reliability rate greater than 99.9%.

“Over the last year, the GP7200 engine has outperformed expectations and is the most fuel efficient engine in commercial service with the lowest noise signature on the A380,” said Engine Alliance Vice President Bill Blair. “The engine’s performance is a testament to the hard work and efforts of employees at both member companies who have developed a strong collaborative relationship focused on delivering and supporting our customers.”

Emirates currently operates five GP7200-powered A380 aircraft and will be the largest operator of GP7200-powered A380 aircraft with a total order for 58 aircraft and more than 250 engines. In the last year, Emirates has logged more than 60,000 flight hours in 1,900 departures and offers one of the longest scheduled flights between Dubai and Sydney, which is about 6,500 nautical miles. Air France is scheduled to receive its first GP7200-powered A380 aircraft in October.

The GP7200 is derived from two successful wide body engine programs, the GE90 and the PW4000. It benefits from the two programs’ latest, proven technologies and the lessons learned from more than 25 million flight hours of successful operation. Certified at 76,500 pounds (340 kN) of thrust, the engine has the capability to produce more than 81,500 pounds (363 kN) of thrust. In addition to being the quietest, most fuel-efficient engine for the A380, the GP7200 engine has emissions that are well below current and anticipated regulations.

The GP7200 is designed and built by GE and Pratt & Whitney, with GE manufacturing the high pressure compressor, combustor and high pressure turbine in Durham, North Carolina, and Pratt &Whitney manufacturing the fan module, low pressure compressor and low pressure turbine.  Final engine assembly is conducted at Pratt & Whitney’s Engine Center in Middletown, Connecticut. GP7000 Engine Program participants include SNECMA (France), Techspace Aero (Belgium) and MTU Aero Engines (Germany).

In addition to Emirates and Air France, the Engine Alliance GP7200 has been selected to power A380 aircraft for Air Austral, Etihad Airways, International Lease Finance Company (ILFC) and Korean Airlines.

The Engine Alliance is a 50/50 joint venture of General Electric (NYSE:GE) and Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

ITT’s Space-Grade Connectors

August 25, 2009

Class G connectors offered in all standard product line and series I, II and III shell styles…

ITT’s new space-grade connectors meet MIL-DTL-38999 class G specifications

SANTA ANA, CA – August 24, 2009 – ITT Interconnect Solutions, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of connectors, interconnects, and cable assemblies, is now qualified to manufacture MIL-DTL-38999 class G connectors, as well as class F (electroless nickel), W and B (cadmium) options. While ITT has developed space-grade connectors for many years, they are now designing products to meet the Thermal Vacuum Outgassing specification of MIL-DTL-38999.

The MIL-DTL-38999 Thermal Vacuum Outgassing requirements stipulate that: “all non-metallic materials shall not release greater than 1.0% total mass loss (TML) and 0.1% collected condensable material (CVCM).”

“By utilizing a special potting and lubricant material, we succeeded in meeting these demanding TML and CVCM parameters, and outgassing of the connectors is achieved by baking at 350 degrees C for 48 hours,” said Keith Teichmann, director of marketing for ITT Interconnect Solutions. “The connectors are offered in all standard product line and series I, II and II shell styles, and customers further benefit from a low-cost product with proven reliability.”

ITT’s MIL-DTL-38999 class G connectors feature lightweight aluminum shells and standard M39029 copper alloy contacts, and are available in a variety of layouts as described in MIL-STD-1560.  Operating temperature ranges from -65 degrees C to +200 degrees C.  The high-quality space-grade connectors are robust enough to withstand 500 mating cycles.  ITT’s MIL-DTL-38999 class G connectors are available for distribution from inventory.

Greenjets New Shared-Ride Service Redefines the Private Jet Industry

August 20, 2009

Greenjets Offers Travelers the Most Affordable Private Jet Flights in the Sky, With Seats Costing as Low as $1,100

Greenjets Offers Private Jets on a per seat basis.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL–(Marketwire – August 19, 2009) – Private jet travelers, frequent first class flyers and mid to large-sized corporate executives now have an economical and environmentally responsible way to fly private — Greenjets new shared-ride service on private jet charter flights. A confirmed seat on Greenjets between New York – Florida will cost only $1,100 per person with a Greenjetcard Black membership. The Greenjetcard, the industry’s first and only shared-ride private jet discount card, saves travelers 60% or more off the already affordable Greenjets seat prices and up to 90% off of charter, fractional ownership or jet cards.

Greenjets currently services New York, Florida, Chicago, and Boston and will begin service to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington, and Atlanta in the next few months. Throughout 2010 and 2011 twenty-seven markets, including Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix, will form part of the Greenjets Shared-Ride Network.

Greenjets shared-ride service offers an option to private travelers that they didn’t have before — the ability to arrange and confirm a seat on a private jet at the lowest possible industry prices. Greenjets has repackaged the private jet into a more affordable consumer unit — the seat rather than the entire jet. This is unprecedented in the business aviation industry, and enables travelers to save time and money while they share the private jet ride.

Currently, there are basically two options for private jet travel — owning or renting a jet. Both of these options are very expensive and require $3 million to buy a plane or $7,000 per flight to rent. Greenjets is much more affordable — as low as $1,100 per seat for flights as far as NY-South Florida.

Private aviation is in most cases used so that executives can save time, increase productivity and travel to multiple places efficiently. However, the $12 billion industry has been on the decline after the big three automakers were reprimanded for flying on their jets to the congressional bailout hearings. Corporations and individuals alike have since been trying to find alternative modes of transportation that are more fiscally responsible. Greenjets offers a sound solution.
