El segundo avión A330 MRTT de Airbus Military para Australia despega desde Brisbane tras finalizar el proceso de conversión y la primera fase de ensayos en vuelo

El segundo A330 MRTT de la Real Fuerza Aérea australiana salió el 28 de octubre de Brisbane tras la conversión en avión cisterna con destino a las instalaciones de Airbus Military en Getafe (Madrid) donde se espera que aterrice el día 30 de octubre para completar los ensayos en vuelo.

Tras finalizar el proceso de conversión y la primera fase de ensayos en vuelo que tuvieron lugar en Brisbane (Australia), el segundo avión A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) para la Real Fuerza Aérea Australiana (RAAF, según sus siglas en inglés), y el primero que se ha convertido en Australia, despegó desde este país el 28 de octubre, rumbo a la factoría de Airbus Military en Getafe vía Estados Unidos, donde se reunirá con el primer MRTT de la RAAF para llevar a cabo una serie final de ensayos en vuelo.
Se trata de la segunda de las cinco unidades pedidas por la RAAF y la primera convertida en un centro industrial externo a la base de Airbus Military en Madrid. La tarea de conversión fue realizada por la empresa Qantas Aviation Services con el apoyo de Airbus Military, lo que pone de manifiesto la capacidad del fabricante para transferir procesos industriales complicados en todo el mundo. También Qantas realizará en Brisbane la conversión de los tres aparatos restantes.
El calendario prevé que el segundo MRTT para Australia llegue a Madrid el 30 de octubre y sea sometido a otras modificaciones antes de reunirse con el primer MRTT australiano en el programa de vuelos para la certificación y homologación. El primer aparato estará listo para su entrega a mediados de 2010.
El A330 MRTT de la Real Fuerza Aérea australiana está equipado con el sistema avanzado de reabastecimiento mediante pértiga (Air Refuelling Boom System – ARBS), con el sistema de control de vuelo electrónico “fly-by-wire” y, además, con dos pods, localizados debajo de las alas, de reabastecimiento mediante manguera y cesta de nueva generación. Además, el aparato estará dotado de un sistema avanzado de aviónica militar que incluye el más moderno equipo de comunicación, navegación e identificación, así como un sistema de enlace de datos Link 16 que proporciona una conexión con el avión en tiempo real.
Actualización del programa MRTT:
Mientras las dos primeras unidades del A330 MRTT australiano han finalizado ya la conversión militar, la tercera unidad llegó a Brisbane en julio de este año y en la actualidad se encuentra bajo conversión bajo estándares militares. Además, los dos primeros A330 MRTT para la Real Fuerza Aérea del Reino Unido, denominados FSTA, se encuentran en la actualidad en conversión en Madrid. Asimismo, el primer A330 MRTT de la Real Fuerza Aérea saudita llegará en noviembre para su conversión en Madrid. En suma, la conversión de los aviones A330-200 en aviones cisterna multimisión avanza rápida y satisfactoriamente.
Otro de los hitos significativos fue el éxito de la prueba de reabastecimiento que tuvo lugar el pasado 21 de octubre. El reabastecimiento fue realizado por primera vez con el sistema Boom que permitió traspasar con un total de 13 contactos más de 1,5 toneladas de combustible al receptor F16 de la Fuerza Aérea portuguesa. Nanning Public Security Bureau Orders One AW109 Power Helicopter

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the Public Security Bureau of Nanning (Southern China) has ordered one AW109 Power light twin engine helicopter. This aircraft will be used to perform a number of roles also including law enforcement and civil protection/disaster relief across the Nanning province.

The AW109 Power has been selected thanks to its outstanding performance, operational capabilities, safety and ease of maintenance following a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process for the supply of a new helicopter to serve the Nanning community. The Public Security Bureau of Nanning province has a requirement for additional helicopters and the purchase of the AW109 Power is the first step to enhance public security capabilities and operational effectiveness through the acquisition of modern platforms.

This latest contract confirms AgustaWestland products as the civil helicopters of choice for law enforcement and public utility duties in China, and further expands the already relevant presence in this market where the company has found a rapidly growing success with other sales logged for the AW109 Power, but also for the AW119 single engine and the AW139 medium twin models. Nanning Public Security Bureau adds to the Beijing, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dailian Public Security Bureau, as law enforcement operators in China using AgustaWestland helicopters.

BOA to fly to Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Lima

The state owned BoA – Boliviana de Aviacion – airline has announced plans to begin service to Argentina, Brazil and Peru as soon as government approvals are obtained. The airline currently operates two B737-300 aircraft and is taking delivery of a third similar aircraft to be used in the international operation. 

Iberia and GOL sign code sharing agreement

While the agreement is subject to government approval, Iberia is confident that it will be able to offer its code on Brazil’s LCC, GOL on domestic flights to 13 destinations, including Porto Alegre, Salvador de Bahia and Brasilia. The Spanish airline carried close to 500,000 passengers on its nonstop flights between Spain and Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. No mention was made, but it is likely, that GOL would place its code on Iberia flights to Europe.

LAN strengthens its presence in Ecuador

The Ecuadorean partner of Chile’s “model airline”, LAN Ecuador, will launch four weekly A318 flights between Quito and Cuenca on October 27. This could be just the beginning of a planned expansion in the Ecuador market. In just six months since it started service domestically and internationally, the airline has 14% and 27% market share respectively.

Low Cost airline in Mexico to resume flights

As the country recovers from the Swine Flu epidemic and overall economic downturn, Juan Carlos Zuazua, marketing director of Viva-Aerobus, has announced that the airline is increasing service in Mexico as well as expanding its alliance with ground transportation services. The airline will add flights between Guadalajara and La Paz, Los Mochis and Los Cabos. It has a relationship with IAMSA, a leading ground transportation consortium, which offers low fares in conjunction with the airline.

Pedro Heilbron talks about the need for consolidation in Latin America

Panama’s “model airline” CEO, Pedro Heilbron, stated after the ALTA Leaders Forum in Cartagena that the industry is looking for further consolidation in the region, whether it is through joint ventures (ala Avianca/TACA) or more codesharing and marketing agreements. He is quoted in a press report saying that: “We have to decide whether we join another alliance since we are leaving a global alliance which we shared with Continental Airlines, or if we continue independently, which we are in the process of analyzing.” According to an unnamed source, Copa and LAN would be a logical alliance partner of some kind. But Pedro would not comment since he prefers to remain silent on the issue until some kind of decision is made.

ALTA appoints new Executive Committee at its successful 6th Leaders Forum

As the Leaders Forum moves on with its resolutions for Safety, Cost Efficiencies and Environment it also announced the appointment of a new six-member Executive Committee for 2009-2010 as follows: Roberto Kriete, president; Manuel Borja, vice president; Fabio Villegas; Pedro Heilbron; Enrique Cueto and Libano Barroso. The conference has been recognized as the most successful to date, with optimism about the future of Latin American and Caribbean airline business.

Enrique Beltranena receives the Federico Bloch award

The award was presented to Enrique Beltranena, CEO of Mexico’s leading LCC, Volaris, at a ceremony last week during the 6th Annual ALTA Airline Leaders Forum in Cartagena. The prestigious award which is bestowed upon a leader in Latin America and the Caribbean who best exemplifies the leadership, courage, character and vision of TACA’s visionary, the late Federico Bloch. The Award is managed by Michael Bell of the leading executive search firm, Spencer Stuart, and is voted on by an independent panel of five judges. Under Enrique’s strong and unwavering leadership Volaris has literally “come out of nowhere” to become close to the largest airline in Mexico. This feat has been accomplished through a well conceived and most importantly, superbly executed program across all facets of the business – route network, pricing, in flight offering, marketing, fleet, stringent cost management, great reliability and sound capital financing.

Moreover, the airline is now starting to post profits despite the highly challenging, and consolidating marketplace in Mexico and Latin America. And it has signed its “first in the business code sharing agreement” with Southwest Airlines. Enrique joins prior award recipients that include Pedro Heilbron, Mauricio Botelho. Constantino de Oliveira, Jr, Enrique Cueto and one other (who shall remain nameless for this purpose). Enrique then made a lovely acceptance speech in which he thanked family, friends, and his workforce and ALTA for the honor. ALTA’s “Leadership Forum” in Cartagena was a major success

With 35 airline CEOs, government officials and more than 400 attendees, this year’s conference in Cartagena (the 6th annual meeting organized by the Latin American & Caribbean Air Transport Association) was reported to be a major success. Speakers included Giovanni Bisignani, president of IATA, who was optimistic about the airline business in the region.
