October 8, 2009
SAO PAULO, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A. (NYSE: GOL, Bovespa: GOLL4), the largest low-cost and low-fare airline in Latin America, and AeroMexico announce that the companies have signed a code- share agreement. The companies are also evaluating the possibility of linking their frequent flyer programs, GOL’s SMILES and Aeromexico’s Club Premier.
Under the code-share agreement, AeroMexico will add its IATA code to GOL flights from Sao Paulo to six Brazilian destinations: Rio de Janeiro (RJ – Galeao and Santos Dumont airports), Belo Horizonte (MG), Porto Alegre (RS), Curitiba (PR), Brasilia (DF) and Salvador (BA). Avianca and TACA about to announce strategic tie-up
October 7, 2009
Colombia’s largest airline Avianca is poised to announce plans for a wide-ranging tie-up with El Salvador’s Grupo TACA today.
While the scope of the tie-up is unclear, the facts that Avianca president Fabio Villegas filed a letter with Colombia’s financial authorities, and that news is scheduled to be released simultaneously in Bogota, San Salvador and Lima, point to a high profile announcement.
The deal will be seen as a response to plans by Avianca’s main southern competitor, the Chilean LAN group, to exchange shares with TACA, its main northern competitor.
Avianca started this month to integrate the operations of its Brazilian affiliate Ocean Air, converting it into a unit managed directly by the airline allowing for a code share agreement on several Ocean Air domestic trunk routes.
In August, Avianca successfully completed a bond offering of more than 500 billion pesos ($250 million) on the Bogotá stock exchange aimed at partly financing its fleet renewal. The newly raised cash could also provide a source of funding for a possible takeover or a merger.
Avianca and TACA share fleet commonality as predominately Airbus operators.
According to Flightglobal’s ACAS database, TACA currently operates 28 A320 family aircraft, including seven A319-100s, 16 Airbus A320-200s and five A321-200s, as well as three Embraer 190s. It also holds orders for five A319-100s, 13 A320-200s and five E-190s.
Avianca holds orders for 12 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, six A330-200s, 27 A320-200s and 14 A319-100s.
The airline currently operates four A319-100s, seven A320-200s, four A330-200s, six 757-200s, three 767-200ERs and two 767-300ERs. It also owns 10 Fokker 50 aircraft and 10 Boeing MD-83s.
The A330s and A320s on order will replace the MD-80s, 757s and 767s, while Avianca plans to use the 12 787s to launch routes to London and Frankfurt.
Lufthansa A380 performs first flight
October 7, 2009
Lufthansa’s first Airbus A380 has taken off from Toulouse on a check flight over Southern France ahead of its delivery to the German carrier next March.
“A truly moving moment,” says Lufthansa executive board member and chief pilot Captain Juergen Raps. “I cannot wait for our first A380 flight next March from Finkenwerder to Frankfurt.”
Flight deck crew reported no abnormalities. The ultra-large aircraft, which Lufthansa says will be configured with around 550 seats, will position to Airbus Hamburg-Finkenwerder site for outfitting in the next few days.
Embraer: third quarter deliveries increased.
October 7, 2009
Embraer’s deliveries during the third quarter increased by nine aircraft to 57, with an almost even split between business and commercial jets. The airframer delivered 29 commercial aircraft and 27 business jets, the bulk of which were the Phenom 100 light jet aircraft. Year-over-year deliveries for that aircraft increased from zero to 22 as the production ramp up of the type continues. In July of this year company executives said the third quarter would be key for the Phenom 100 as Embraer worked to achieve a production rate of 3.5 aircraft per week. The executives also said at that time 70 aircraft were on the assembly line and finishing and delivering those aircraft would be a challenge. Deliveries of the airframer’s Legacy 600 aircraft fell from nine to five year-over-year. In its commercial line E-190s accounted for the largest number of deliveries at 17, although that’s a decrease of three aircraft compared with the 20 E-190s delivered during the third quarter of 2008. E-195 deliveries grew from one to four year-over-year as E-170 deliveries increased by one aircraft to four. Deliveries of the E-175 jet fell by nine aircraft from 12 to three. Embraer delivered one ERJ-145 during the quarter. Embraer recorded one defense industry delivery as the airframer delivered the first E-190 to the Brazilian government. The company has delivered 153 aircraft through the third quarter of this year. Its $18.6 billion backlog is 6% less than the $19.8 billion it recorded on 30 June. Embraer earlier this year said it aims to deliver 115 commercial aircraft in 2009.
Lufthansa to confirm in-flight broadband plan next week
October 6, 2009
Star Alliance member Lufthansa next week will confirm a partnership with Panasonic Avionics to reignite in-flight broadband on its overseas flights. Sources with knowledge of the situation tell ATI and Flightglobal that Lufthansa will announce the agreement on 12 October. Some 72 aircraft in Lufthansa’s international fleet are still equipped with Connexion by Boeing (CBB) antennas. Those systems will remain in place when Lufthansa starts offering Panasonic’s Ku-band-based eXconnect service to passengers. New Lufthansa aircraft, including the carrier’s forthcoming Airbus A380s, are expected to be retrofitted with Panasonic’s eXconnect antenna, which is supplied by EMS and includes Starling technology. While the eXconnect antenna is nearly the same size as the MELCO antenna used by now-commercially-defunct CBB, it is only a fraction of the weight. The radome has also been contoured to reduce drag and improve efficiency.

GE38 Sets Horsepower Record in Early Testing

GE38 Sets Horsepower Record in Early Testing
LYNN, Massachusetts — October 6, 2009 — The GE38 turboshaft engine
recently exceeded required power for the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter
that Sikorsky Aircraft is developing for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC),
reaching 7,300 shaft-horsepower and establishing a shaft-horsepower
record for the GE-Lynn facility.
“The GE38 continues to meet or exceed customer expectations as the first
engine to test (FETT) reaches the midpoint of its test cycle,” said
Harry Nahatis, GE38 program manager. “In addition to reaching the
significant shaft-horsepower milestone, the control system has operated
well, and vibrations have stayed within predicted limits.”
The GE38 FETT, which is scheduled to complete testing this year, has
accumulated data on more than 600 parameters, including pressures,
temperature and vibrations. Testing following the FETT phase will focus
on engine durability, altitude performance and environmental
compatibility.
GE ushered in a new era of helicopter propulsion on June 24, when first
full engine testing began. Selected in December 2006 to power the
CH-53K helicopter for the USMC, the GE38 represents the cornerstone for
a new turboshaft/turboprop engine family, with a revenue potential of
more than $4 billion including heavy-lift applications.
Testing of the GE38 is expected to run through 2011, concurrent with a
full U.S. military qualification test program. This testing, conducted
under a System Development and Demonstration (SDD) program contract,
includes five ground-test engines that will accumulate more than 5,000
engine test hours, plus 20 flight-test engines for the CH-53K
development aircraft.
GE38 architecture is updated with new aerodynamic features for more
efficient operation, plus improved cooling schemes and materials for
added durability. In addition, fuel consumption is substantially lower
than that of other engines in its power class (7,500 shp) for longer
range and/or heavier payloads.
