April 21, 2010

Airbus military has completed all the flight test required
for the certification of the new-generation hose-and drogue
refueling system on the A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport(MRTT).
This opens the way towards the formal military certification of the
system from Spain’s INTA certification authority this summer.
Meanwhile, flight testing of the Airbus Military Aerial Refueling
Boom System(ARBS) are expected to be completed soon.
Delivery of the first A-330 MRRT will be delivered to the Royal

EADS Plans To Bid For Tanker Contract

April 21, 2010

The European Aeronautic Defence and Space
Company(EADS) has relaunched its bid to supply
the US Air Force with a new aerial refueling tankers.
EADS intends to submit a proposal on July 9 in a
bid that is valued $35 billion.
Ralph Crosby, chairman of EADS North America said
that EADS felt “almost compelled” to enter the
competition to offer its A-330-based tanker.
EADS will now bid as the prime contractor for the
project. Its partner Northrop Grumman dropped out
six weeks ago, amid complaints that Washington
was engaging in protectionism that favored Boeing.
EADS had tried but failed to line up another American
partner to take Northrop’s place.
Northrop and EADS won a previous US tanker contract
in 2008, but the Pentagon canceled the deal after
government auditors upheld a protest by Boeing that
errors were made in the bid process.
The competing companies now have until July 9 to
submit their bids.
The Pentagon welcomed the renewed competition
for the tanker replacement program, and said it
expected to decide on a winner for the supply of
179 planes by early fall.
By choosing to compete, EADS could ensure solid relations
from the Pentagon in the future even if it lost the tanker
contract.
The Air Force see the KC-X aircraft as crucial to reinforcing
American air power and are anxious to replace the older Boeing
KC-135 Stratotankers that date back to the 1950’s.

Brazil’s ANAC Certifies AFS Inlet Barrier Filter for Eurocopter EC130 and AS350B3 Dual Hydraulic Helicopters

April 18, 2010

St. Louis, Mo., 14 April, 2010 – Aerospace Filtration Systems, Inc. (AFS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Donaldson Company, Inc. (NYSE:DCI) and a division of the Aerospace and Defense Group, has received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval from Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) for an Inlet Barrier Filter (IBF) system for the Eurocopter EC130 B4 and Eurocopter AS350B3 helicopters with dual hydraulic systems.

Donaldson Inlet Barrier Filter systems are already in use on Eurocopter AS350 and EC130 models worldwide, providing reliable performance to operators worldwide, performing law enforcement, air medical, firefighting, news gathering and utility missions.

“We are very pleased to now offer our proven EC130/AS350B3 IBF to operators in Brazil,” said Donaldson St. Louis Business Development Director Robert Stenberg.  “This important ANAC certification gives individual and mixed fleet operators the ability to equip their helicopters with the best engine protection available.”  The approval allows operation to the basic inlet performance charts with no inlet driven flight or gross weight restrictions, and pilots have the option to use the sand filter performance charts when required.

The Donaldson system features a sealed intake plenum that replaces the inlet screens, sand filter/particle separator or alternate barrier filter.  Design of the IBF allows easy installation, utilizing the existing cowl with top surface modification only.  The filter and aft-facing bypass system are flush with the upper surface of the EC130 or B3 dual hydraulic cowling, utilizing an internal bypass plenum.  The bypass capability is an important IBF safety feature that is lacking in most traditional sand filters and particle separators.

Providing the most comprehensive line of IBF solutions, Donaldson Aerospace & Defense is the industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of high-performance engine IBF systems for commercial and military propulsion systems.
Through their Donaldson St. Louis location, AFS provides certified IBF solutions for the following:
•    AgustaWestland A119 Koala, AW119Ke and AW139
•    Bell 205A1, 206B, 407, 206L-3/4, 206L-1(C30), 429 and 430
•    Eurocopter EC130, AS350 B/BA/B1/B2/B3, AS350’s with Soloy or Heli-Lynx Honeywell engine conversions
•    MD Helicopters MD 369H Series, MD 500D/E/F and MD 900/902
IBF solutions for the AgustaWestland AW109 Power and Grand, Eurocopter EC135 as well as the Bell 206L are currently in development.
