Donaldson Inlet Barrier Filters Keep Los Angeles Fire Department Helicopters Ready for Service
April 11, 2011
ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 11, 2011 – Donaldson Aerospace & Defense, a division of Donaldson Company, Inc. (NYSE: DCI), is helping the Air Operations Section of the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) meet the Department’s creed, “serving with courage, integrity and pride.”
Donaldson has provided Inlet Barrier Filters (IBFs) for the Section’s newest in-service rotorcraft, two AgustaWestland 139 twin-engine medium helicopters. A third new AW139 is coming from the factory with the IBF kit installed. Air Ops also plans to acquire additional AW139s as it retires older rotorcraft from its fleet and will include Donaldson IBFs on these helicopters as well.
“Filters are critical for the missions we fly,” said Rick Wheeler, an LAFD Air Ops pilot. “We conduct search and rescue flights and aerial firefighting in unimproved areas that tend to be real dirty, and that can affect engine capability and safety of flight. It’s also surprising how much debris stirs up even when flying over cityscapes and airports.”
According to Wheeler, the unit’s six helicopters, including the AW139s, three Bell 412s and a Bell 206 Jet Ranger used for flight training, search and rescue and utility missions are constantly on call, with each aircraft accumulating up to 500 flight hours per year. Donaldson IBFs have improved AW139 readiness. “In the past, engines could quickly become blocked in smoky or dusty environments, increasing engine temperature and sometimes curtailing flights,” Wheeler explained. “With IBFs installed, there’s no problem with particulates, and that really saves engines.”
Wheeler added that IBFs can operate without power restrictions. In fact, both AW139s received FAA certification for Category A operations, which the Donaldson IBFs are approved to support. The IBFs also are easily maintained. Filter Maintenance Aids facilitate cleaning or replacement during daily inspections and progressive maintenance. A cockpit indicator enables air crew to bypass the system in emergencies and keep air flowing through the engine, an important feature missing in other AW139 engine inlet protection options. “Donaldson IBFs work really well,” Wheeler concluded.
The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Air Ops Section has served the city and its residents since 1962, conducting aerial firefighting, air ambulance, mountain, over-ocean and swift-water search and rescue and support missions. The Section currently operates six helicopters based at Van Nuys Airport. Air crews are highly trained in emergency flight procedures, and paramedics hold advanced medical certifications relating to patient airway management and flight physiology as required by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.
¿Santiago – Sao Paulo Low cost?
April 11, 2011
Hawker Beechcraft Sees Aviation Financing Becoming Increasingly Available to Business Aircraft Buyers
April 8, 2011
Trend supported by global macro-economic trends, increase of sales financing support
WICHITA, Kan. (April 7, 2011) – During a recent corporate jet finance conference, Hawker Beechcraft Corporation (HBC) announced that it has seen the overall cost of aircraft financing decrease throughout the past 24 months compared to prices seen during the economic downturn, with buyers seeing greater access to aviation financing. The company says these trends have been aided by a number of factors including the global economic recovery, an increase in knowledge and sophistication of the key players in aircraft asset-based financing, growing competition among local institutions expanding into the global marketplace, and the increasingly active role of manufacturers in helping potential clients find financing.
“Over the past 12-24 months, we have seen a gradual, yet consistent thaw in the aviation finance sector as a number of lenders have gained an increasing appetite for this business,” said Kirsten Bartok, HBC vice president, Global Aircraft Financing. “A number of large commercial banks are looking to offer aviation finance in a growing number of countries outside of Western Europe and North America, and some smaller indigenous banks are looking to enter or grow their footprint in this market within their own countries, and in some cases beyond this.”
One of the reasons for this growing interest is that HBC, along with other aircraft manufacturers, is playing a more proactive role in helping financial institutions develop a better understanding of the aircraft industry by providing information on future product developments and life cycle plans, for example. These efforts have helped in reducing the asset-associated risk in transactions and created an environment that allows for lending to a wider customer base.
In addition, HBC is doing more to assist potential customers with gathering the relevant material needed to secure financing and making recommendations on potential banks for loans or leases. Financing costs are reduced when customers position themselves in the most transparent way and structure their purchase correctly in terms of registration and operation.
As private banks increase their knowledge and understanding of the aviation industry, HBC has seen them take a more proactive role in not only assisting their clients with their aircraft purchase, but also in educating them on the range of aviation products. Further, HBC has seen an increased role on the part of export credit agencies (ECA) in the business aviation sector, especially in emerging market countries where financing is often harder to secure. ECA financing has historically been very supportive of commercial aircraft purchases and their success in this sector is fueling their involvement in business aircraft purchases as well.
Greater involvement on the part of aircraft manufacturers in providing more industry data and playing a larger role in introducing customers to financial institutions has also led to further interest in post-transaction financing (also known as cash-out or re-financing transactions). Through assisting in building relationships between customers and banks at an early stage, customers are becoming better positioned to purchase an aircraft at a highly competitive price with a temporary line of credit or cash, and then work with the bank to procure more long term financing after the sale.
“Over the past year, the aviation finance sector has grown and become more sophisticated,” Bartok said. “We expect the availability of financing to continue increasing as well.”

April 5, 2011
WICHITA, Kan., April 5, 2011 ˜ Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, reported today that it secured orders for 30 aircraft at the Sun ‘n Fun International Fly-In & Expo that concluded Sunday in Lakeland, Fla.
“The opening days of Sun ‘n Fun were very positive, and while the storm on Thursday interrupted that mood somewhat, the exhibitors and the crowds bounced back to finish the show strong,” said Mark Paolucci, Cessna’s senior vice president of Sales and Marketing. “Cessna took 16 orders for the new Corvalis TTX and 13 orders for high-wing single-engine pistons. Also, a Cessna Sales Team Authorized Representative took an order for a Grand Caravan.”
Launched on the first day of Sun ‘n Fun, the Corvalis TTX features new standard and optional equipment, all-new interior and paint scheme options, and the Intrinzic flight deck powered by the Garmin G2000. The G2000 is the first commercially available touch-screen-controlled glass flight deck ever designed for a piston aircraft offered to the general public.
The debut of the TTX generated steady traffic to Cessna’s static display, where customers could see a mock-up of the newest generation of the world’s fastest commercially available fixed-gear single-engine piston aircraft.
Included in the 30 orders secured at Sun ‘n Fun are five new 172 Skyhawks for the University of North Dakota. The Skyhawks are scheduled for delivery in July and August. The order is part of a multi-year agreement between Cessna and UND’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences to modernize its fleet of single-engine piston aircraft and will bring the training fleet to 63 Skyhawks, the largest single fleet of G1000-equipped Skyhawks in the U.S. UND began its acquisition of new Skyhawks in July 2008.
