Embraer Institute Creates New High School in Botucatu

Botucatu, São Paulo, March 15, 2012 – The Embraer Education and Research Institute announced, today, the construction of a new Embraer High School, which is a model school focusing on academic excellence for students coming from the public school system. An investment of about R$ 5 million was made in the school that will have a capacity for 360 students and is located next to Embraer’s Botucatu Unit, in outstate São Paulo, on land granted by the city government.

In the beginning of 2013, the school will open for its first class, and it will be called Embraer Casimiro Montenegro Filho High School, in honor of one of the founders of the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA) and the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DCTA). Air Marshall Casimiro Montenegro Filho was outstanding for his vision of the role of education in adding value to society, which also has guided the actions of the Embraer Institute since its founding, over 10 years ago.

The new school will operate along the same lines at Embraer Juarez Wanderley High School, in São José dos Campos, which has already graduated 1,600 students, since it opened in 2002. The Embraer Institute provides full support for the school that was one of the five best-ranked in the State of São Paulo, on the National High School Exam (Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio – ENEM) of 2010. One hundred percent of its students have passed college entrance exams, with more than 80% of them going to public universities.

Embraer Casimiro Montenegro Filho High School will benefit students coming from the public schools of the city of Botucatu, located 240 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo, as well as seven other cities in the region: Anhembi, Areiópolis, Bofete, Itatinga, Pardinho, Pratânia, and São Manuel.

“Since 2004, we have carried out a number of projects focusing on education in the region,” stated Pedro Ferraz, Director of the Embraer Institute. “Today, we take another big step by launching the second unit of our successful Embraer High School, significantly expanding the Company’s social actions in the communities where it is involved.”

The educational model developed and perfected throughout the ten-year history of the first Embraer High School is based on three objectives: academic excellence, career guidance, and cultural, social and environmental preparation. The new high school will follow the same pedagogical and management concepts in its classrooms, library and modern laboratories. The school will have a 10-hour day, and all students will receive, at no cost, meals at school, uniforms, transportation and educational materials. The admission process will be handled, annually, starting with the third quarter of 2012, by an independent institution.

Embraer has been involved in Botucatu since 1980, when it incorporated the activities of Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva. The plant currently has some 1,800 employees and is responsible for producing, selling and supporting the Ipanema agricultural aircraft, manufacturing parts and structures for commercial and executive jets, and assembling the fuselage of the advanced training and light attack Super Tucano military airplane.

Since its founding, in 2001, the Embraer Education and Research Institute has focused its actions on initiatives that contribute to the process of social inclusion through education. The Institute is primarily involved in two areas: educational projects offered to public school students, and projects for improving the management process, focusing on civilian organizations, NGOs, and public schools.
