June 18, 2013

Le Bourget, France, June 17, 2013– The European Space Agency (ESA) and European Defense Agency (EDA) recently conducted a series of flight demonstrations in Spain to simulate the integration of unmanned aerial systems (UASs) into civilian airspace.
The demonstration was constructed from more than 10 carefully designed tests portraying real scenarios likely to occur in civilian airspace. The Heron 1, a medium-altitude, long-endurance drone, developed and manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), completed all flight tests successfully. The flight demonstrations were timed to coincide with civil and military flights operating from the San Javier base, which shares facilities with Murcia Airport.

Nordic Aviation Capital places a landmark order for 90 ATR -600s

June 18, 2013

The total value of the agreement amounts to over 2.1 billion dollars and includes orders for 35 firm aircraft

The European turboprop manufacturer ATR and the Danish leasing company Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) signed a historic agreement today for the sale of 90 ATR -600s, including 35 firm orders (30 ATR 72-600s and 5 ATR 42-600s). The contract, including options, amounts to over US$ 2.1 billion.

NAC, which has signed several orders for new ATRs over the past three years, already has the largest fleet of ATRs in the world with over hundred aircraft. With the progressive arrival of the 30 additional ATR 72-600s and 5 ATR 42-600s into its fleet, NAC’s ATR portfolio will exceed 150 aircraft by 2016.

Martin Møller, Chairman of NAC, said: “We have made ATR turboprops one of the main pillars of our present and future development. We believe that regional aviation in the years to come will increasingly rely on this outstanding technology, and that ATR aircraft will continue to see great success with airlines operating in this segment. The 180 airlines operating ATRs around the world represent so many opportunities for us to grow our business.” He added: “Our experience as lessors confirms the strong demand for ATRs with regional airlines. Their very low operating costs and high reliability are the major drivers for ensuring profitability, both for airlines and for ourselves.”

Filippo Bagnato, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, said: “This is a landmark order for ATR and our new generation aircraft as well as for this dynamic leasing company. It is a validation of the desirability of our aircraft and recognition of their high residual value”. He added “NAC’s order is indisputable proof of a return to the future for propeller aircraft and the market confidence in our product.”

In the past three years, nearly one in four ATRs were sold to leasing companies. NAC has been at the forefront of this development due to their unique focus and expertise on turboprop aircraft. NAC believes that turboprop’ aircraft will become the key element for the development of regional aviation and with this order they cement their position as the leading lessor of turboprop aircraft.

TAM A320 equipped with Sharklet fuel saving wing-tip devices

LATAM Airlines Group, the holding company for LAN and TAM Airlines and third largest Airbus customer in terms of in-service and on order aircraft, has taken delivery of its 200th A320 aircraft at Le Bourget Paris Air Show. The TAM A320 is equipped with Sharklet fuel-saving wing-tip devices and powered by CFM engines.

“We are very happy to receive our 200th Airbus A320 at the 50th Paris Air Show, a truly momentous occasion that reflects the important relationship Airbus, LAN, TAM and now LATAM have shared since 1998,” said Roberto Alvo, LATAM Airlines Group’s Chief Corporate Officer. “The A320 has been a key element to the company’s growth over the years and success in South America.”

LATAM received its first Sharklet-equipped aircraft in April 2013. Made from light-weight composites, Sharklets are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft allowing airlines to reduce fuel burn up to four percent and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,000 tons per aircraft per year.

LATAM has ordered a total of 380 aircraft, has almost 250 aircraft in operation and their joint Airbus backlog is nearly 170, making them the third largest airline customer and third largest operator of Airbus aircraft in the world. The airline group is also the largest A320 operator in Latin America and one of the largest in the world.

With more than 760 aircraft sold and a backlog that exceeds 360, more than 500 Airbus aircraft are in operation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In the last 10 years, Airbus has tripled its in-service fleet, while delivering more than 60 percent of all aircraft operating in the region.

Piaggio Aero Industries Unveils at the 2013 Paris Air show The P.1HH“HammerHead” – unmanned Aerial System

June 18, 2013

Paris, June 18th, 2013:   Piaggio Aero Industries unveiled at the 2013 Paris Air Show today, the Piaggio Aero P.1HH “HammerHead”- Unmanned Aerial System (UAS).

The Piaggio Aero P.1HH HammerHead is a new, state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) designed for
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions whose combination of performance and operational characteristics is at the very top end of the UAS MALE category.

The  P.1HH HammerHead technological demonstrator was designed and built in less than one year and it  has already  successfully completed low speed taxi tests demonstrating  Piaggio Aero’s ability to deliver an efficient UAV platform integrating  the state of the art Selex ES  SkyISTAR Mission Management system.

The P.1HH “HammerHead” development program proceeds with the demonstration/validation phase through an extensive campaign of laboratory and ground tests aimed at supporting the first flight.
After the first engine start and the runway taxi that took place on February 14 2013 at an Italian Air Force base, the programme has now entered the final phase of test where, the aircraft systems in flight configuration will be tested at all levels in accordance with the build-up approach taken on the UAS.

On June 12th 2013, the Vehicle Control Management System (VCMS) was successfully tested on board the aircraft through remote control. The test demonstrated the UAV’s fully autonomous engine control capability, normal and auto brake features as well as complete control of all ground handling.

The VCMS – which commands the aerodynamic control surfaces and manages the on-board equipment with a triple redundancy Flight Control Computer system and multiple remote Servo Interface Units –   has been extensively tested in an Iron Bird environment. The ground test campaign has been supported by a dedicated engine test rig, while the integration and verification of the servo actuation system and its protective features have been performed in a closed loop to demonstrate the robustness of the adopted technical solution. The test campaign will proceed with both ground and flight envelope expansion to achieve flight readiness status of the P.1HH HammerHead prototype.
