TRU Simulation + Training and Bell Helicopter Announce Collaboration to Build Bell 525 Full Flight Simulator
July 15, 2014
FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW, ENGLAND (July 15, 2014) – Bell Helicopter and TRU Simulation + Training (TRU), both Textron Inc. companies, (NYSE: TXT), announced an agreement for TRU to complete the design, development, manufacturing, installation, testing and certification of the Bell 525 Level D Full Flight Simulator (FFS).
The FFS will be certified to FAA Level D, as well as EASA/JAA Level D. TRU will employ its ODYSSEY™ H FFS simulator product, which utilizes TRU’s state-of-the-art Ultra High Definition Visual System with 240 degree horizontal by 80 degree vertical field of view Visual Display, in the design and development of the Bell 525 FFS. The ODYSSEY H is capable of meeting EASA and FAA Level D helicopter certifications. The simulator is designed especially for the unique training requirements and needs of the helicopter pilot.
“Our company includes service as a trusted high fidelity rotorcraft simulation and training partner to the military for more than two decades,” explained TRU Simulation + Training President and CEO Jim Takats. “It’s exciting for our team to apply that expertise to the civil market by meeting the training needs of operators of this game-changing Bell Helicopter platform.”
TRU will use the Bell 525 design and components to develop and deliver a flight compartment which is an exact duplicate of the Bell 525 cockpit, forward of the anti-torque pedals to aft of the pilots’ seats. All controls, panels, instruments, avionics, equipment and furnishings will be identical in appearance, feel, location and operation to those of the actual aircraft. It will respond exactly like the aircraft in all flight conditions, as well as accurately simulate instrument readings and malfunctions and enable them to be addressed through normal and emergency procedures.
“We are pleased to be collaborating with TRU in the development and production of the Bell 525 FFS,” said Eric Cardinali, executive vice president, Bell Helicopter Customer Support and Services. “Their expertise in aviation simulation and training solutions is a perfect complement to Bell Helicopter’s own industry-leading training capabilities.”
The simulator will be built at TRU’s facility in Tampa, Fla., and is expected to be fully operational in Q1 2016, to coincide with the certification timeline for the actual aircraft.
“We have kept the customer in mind throughout the FFS development process,” continued Cardinali. “The timing of the simulator installation and certification is such that operators can enroll in training and be certified to fly the aircraft by the time they take delivery.”
TRU Simulation + Training was formed in April out of three legacy companies – Mechtronix Inc. and OPINICUS Corporation that were acquired by Textron late last year, and a portion of the former AAI Logistics & Technical Services.

Textron Aviation delivers full product lineup for special missions market
July 14, 2014
FARNBOROUGH, U.K., July 14, 2014 – Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, said today at the Farnborough International Airshow that the entire product range of Beechcraft and Cessna products are available in special mission configurations. All 20 current production aircraft – including a Special Mission Beechcraft King Air 350ER on display this week in Farnborough, U.K. – fit numerous mission profiles, including aerial survey, air ambulance, flight inspection, aerial surveillance, training and utility transport.
“With the combination of the Beechcraft and Cessna products within Textron Aviation, we now offer the largest proposition of special mission platforms in the industry,” said Dan Keady, vice president, Special Missions. “We have seen a significant growth in special mission activity around the globe and anticipate this market will continue to grow across our aircraft platforms. From our piston-engine Beechcraft and Cessna products up to the largest Citation business jets, we are able to offer our customers an aircraft to fit just about any mission requirement.”
The Beechcraft products, particularly the King Air turboprops, are utilized around the globe in a number of services including air ambulance, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), maritime patrol and pilot training, while the Cessna product line lends itself to multiple special mission roles from piston trainers, to the multi-purposed Caravan operating in an air ambulance, cargo, parachute and float plane platforms. The Citation jets are also used in training, flight inspection and air ambulance roles throughout the world.
“There have been a number of factors fuelling the special mission business,” Keady said. “Two key factors include advances in on-board technology, which means aircraft such as our turboprops can be used for missions previously requiring larger, more expensive military aircraft. In addition, more organizations are looking to use their business aircraft for multiple roles, which could include using a King Air for executive or utility transport while having the ability to quickly adapt it to an air ambulance configuration, for example.”
This week at Farnborough, the Textron Aviation display includes a specially modified Beechcraft King Air 350ER, which is operated out of Northern Europe and fitted with a unique and flexible mission package that supports search and rescue, fishery inspection, pollution monitoring and seaway/shipping lane surveillance missions. The King Air 350ER was selected for these missions due to its high dash speeds, long endurance, high reliability and low operating cost.
Beechcraft launches Baron G58 ISR demonstrator tour
July 14, 2014
FARNBOROUGH, U.K., July 14, 2014 – Beechcraft Corporation, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, announced today during the Farnborough International Airshow that it has launched a new demonstrator dedicated to showcasing the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities of its Baron G58 piston-engine aircraft.
“There’s a great need from law enforcement agencies around the world for a light ISR platform that offers the needed performance and capabilities at an affordable price point,” said Dan Keady, vice president, Special Missions. “The Baron is uniquely suited to offer a balance of high dash speeds, long endurance, state-of-the-art avionics, exceptional flying and handling qualities, a rugged airframe and low operating costs.”
The demo aircraft is scheduled to begin its tour in North America this month with its first stop at the Airborne Law Enforcement Association Expo July 16-19 in Phoenix, Ariz. The aircraft will also attend the Latin American Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (LABACE) Aug. 12-14 in Brazil to begin a tour of South America, before completing the year with a tour throughout the UK and Europe.
Beechcraft has long served the ISR markets with its range of King Air turboprops and first introduced a version of its twin-engine piston Baron G58 aircraft with ISR capabilities in 2012 at the Farnborough International Airshow. The company delivered the first Baron G58 with an ISR package in 2013 to the Fuerzas Unidas de Rápida Acción (FURA), an agency within the Puerto Rico Police Department that uses the aircraft for law enforcement surveillance missions within the region.
The Baron G58 ISR package includes a FLIR 230-HD electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera system, an operator’s console that houses the mapping/mission management computer, a recorder and a multi-band communications radio system and data link for special mission operators. The 230-HD EO/IR camera has the ability to virtually see both day and night, over land and water, in both good and poor weather. The mission mapping system provides the camera operator with a visual representation of the target location. The multi-band communications radio gives the flight crew and the sensor operator the ability to communicate directly with the military, police vehicles, coast guard and other maritime vessels and the recorder provides court admissible evidence for prosecution.
All of the surveillance mission equipment for the Beechcraft Baron G58 ISR is commercially available. While the physical integration of the mission sensors to the airframe is highly specialized, the mission package integration is done without customized software, making it easy to troubleshoot and maintain in the field.
