Kazan Helicopters launches new painting and finishing workshop
August 11, 2014
Kazan / 11 August 2014
Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec, announces that Kazan Helicopters has launched a new painting and finishing workshop as part of its ongoing programme of upgrade work. The new facility was opened today in the presence of the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov.
“The construction of the new workshop was driven by the plant’s increased production volumes,” said Vadim Ligai, General Director of Kazan Helicopters and Deputy CEO of Russian Helicopters. “Using new paint ovens will shorten the helicopter painting cycle by an average of 25-30%, increase application quality and improve working conditions.”
The new workshop consists of advanced equipment including seven paint ovens built by Russian company Novateck, a pre-painting processing chamber, and equipment to regulate temperature and humidity during adhesion operations. Before the reconstruction, helicopters were painted in non-segregated premises that also housed the paint ovens. There were also no separate workshops for finishing of components, including VIP cabins, and no isolated areas for pre-painting surface preparation or design of fuel tanks and other parts.
The cost of constructing and outfitting the new workshop was about RUB 467 million. The investment has increased the throughput capacity by 50%, while the painting cycle has reduced from nine to five hours. Another important benefit is that the new equipment will increase energy efficiency, reducing electricity costs by lowering consumption.
Upgrading production capacities is a key aim of Russian Helicopters’ ongoing drive to create a dynamic and globally competitive helicopter industry. Russian Helicopters launched this extensive programme in 2008, and has made significant investments: in 2013 investment in production capacities totalled RUB 8.3 billion, an increase of 8.5% on the previous year.
Work began in 2008 on upgrading and technical refitting at Kazan Helicopters and the rest of Russia’s helicopter industry. Today the plant has an investment programme through 2018 that includes around 15 individual investment projects. Since work began, the plant’s machining production facilities have been completely reconstructed: two automated production lines by Mazak have been installed for production of components, each of which requires a single operator per shift. The lines can work for 8 hours unsupervised, which means that they can operate around the clock. Labour productivity is 2-2.5 times higher than for traditional machining centres, and more than 20 times greater than using general-purpose equipment.
Upgrade work of the plant’s warehousing facilities and logistics is also nearing completion, while reconstruction of the assembly, galvanising and other production facilities is underway. In total the plant plans to spend RUB 12.245 billion on reconstruction and upgrade work.
Kazan Helicopters produces Mi-8/17 series helicopters that are operated in over 100 countries worldwide. A wide range of configurations are produced: transport, passenger, search and rescue, landing and transport, among many others. Preparations are underway to launch production of the Mi-38 passenger transport helicopter. Since 1997, Kazan Helicopters has been certified to develop helicopter technology: today the light twin-engine Ansat helicopter is in series production.
Russian Helicopters, JSC is a subsidiary of UIC Oboronprom, which in turn is a part of State Corporation Rostec. It is one of the global leaders in helicopter production and the only helicopter design and production powerhouse in Russia. Russian Helicopters is headquartered in Moscow. Its helicopters are popular among Russian ministries and state authorities (Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Emergency Control Ministry), operators (Gazpromavia, UTair), major Russian corporations. Over 8000 helicopters of Soviet/Russian make are operated in 110 countries worldwide. Traditionally the demand is highest in the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Russia, and CIS countries. Russian Helicopters was established in 2007. In 2013 its IFRS revenues increased 10% to RUB 138.3 billion. Deliveries reached 275 helicopters.
UIC Oboronprom, JSC is a multi-profile industrial and investment group established in 2002. It is a part of Russian Technologies State Corporation. Its main tasks include: helicopter engineering (Russian Helicopters, JSC) and engine-building (United Engine Industry Corporation managing company).
State Corporation Rostec is a Russian corporation founded in 2007 for the purpose of promoting the development, production and export of hi-tech civilian and military industry products. It comprises 663 organizations, nine of which have now been formed as holding companies of the military-industrial complex and five of them are involved in civil industries. Rostec’s organizations are located in 60 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and supply their products to the markets of more than 70 countries. FORT WORTH, TEXAS (August 11, 2014) – Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. company (NYSE: TXT), has announced it will feature the Bell 407GX, Bell 429WLG and the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X™ at the 11th annual Latin American Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (LABACE) in São Paulo, Brazil August 12-14. Bell Helicopter will also be joined by TAM Aviação Executiva, its independent representative in the region. Bell Helicopter will be located at chalet 5110.
“LABACE gives us a great opportunity to engage the business aviation community in both Brazil and throughout Latin America,” said Jay Ortiz, Bell Helicopter’s vice president of commercial business in Latin America. “We have already seen a great response to the Bell 407GX and Bell 429 with more than 75 combined new models in operation to date and the corporate market segment is our overall second largest mission type operated by our Latin American customers.”
Bell Helicopter first entered the Latin America market more than 60 years ago, and today the region has a fleet size of more than 1,670 aircraft. In the last two years, more Bell helicopters were sold in Latin America than in any global region besides North America.
“The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X has been quickly embraced in Latin America since we first brought the aircraft mockup to the region at FIDAE 2014 earlier this year,” said Ortiz. “We’ve been carefully listening to the needs of our customers throughout the world and have already signed more than 50 purchase agreements for future Jet Ranger X deliveries in the region, which accounts for a quarter of the total purchase agreements signed worldwide.”
The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X is the newest member of the Bell Helicopter family. It is a customer-driven design that blends proven systems with advanced technology and a sleek, modern look. The Bell 505 places safety, performance and affordability at its forefront. The Garmin G1000H Integrated Avionics Suite provides pilots critical flight information at a glance to maximize situational awareness. Pilot workload is further reduced by the Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine with dual channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). The Bell 505 features a high inertia rotor system delivering superior auto rotation capabilities. With the ideal combination of speed, range and useful load, the Jet Ranger X is designed to deliver best-in-class performance.
The Bell 407GX delivers power and speed with a smooth, quiet ride and a spacious cabin that accommodates six passengers. The aircraft also features the fully-integrated Garmin G1000HTM flight deck, providing critical flight information at a glance for greater situational awareness and increased safety. The Bell 407GX flight deck’s high resolution LCD screens host primary flight and multi-function display information, including Helicopter Terrain Awareness Warning System, Helicopter Synthetic Vision Technology™, Traffic Information Systems and more. The 407GX also features a tail rotor camera, allowing the pilot a clear view of the tail during take-offs and landings.
The Bell 429WLG can land in a larger number of environments and conditions, providing operators of all mission profiles additional flexibility. Its taxiing capability is ideal for both repositioning in limited spaces and situations that require ground taxi, such as positioning closer to fixed-base operators. These benefits mean that both flight crews and passengers can save time and effort getting where they need to go. The Bell 429WLG also has reduced drag due to the loss of skids and an increased cruise speed. The Bell 429 is approved to operate at an increased gross weight of 7,500 pounds (3,402 kilograms) in several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. The Bell 429WLG is also approved for standard 7,000 lb. gross weight operations as well as the additional 500 lb. weight increase in both Canada and Brazil, with other certifications currently in work.
In addition to providing customers with the products they want and need, Bell Helicopter remains focused on providing world-class support and service to its Latin America customer base. Currently, there are 19 independent representatives and distributors in the region and continues to grow its presence in Latin America. The company’s focus on its customers is a key differentiator from the competition, as evidenced by Bell Helicopter’s consistent number one ranking in Pro Pilot’s service and support rankings for the 20th consecutive year. Bell Helicopter was also recently ranked number one for the ninth consecutive year in Aviation International News annual product support survey.
