Airbus Defence and Space announces management and organisational changes in Military Aircraft, A400M Business Segment

January 29, 2015

·        Fernando Alonso named new Head of Military Aircraft at Airbus Defence and Space and joins Airbus Defence and Space  Executive Committee, replaces Domingo Ureña-Raso who will take a new position in the group
·        Industrialisation of A400M now integrated into the Operational unit of the division under the lead of Pilar Albiac-Murillo
·        A400M programme review continues, readied for 2014 Annual Results Disclosure

Airbus Defence and Space has named Fernando Alonso (58) as Head of its Military Aircraft business unit as per 1st of March. Bernhard Gerwert, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, will act as interim Head of Military Aircraft until this date. Fernando Alonso replaces Domingo Ureña-Raso (56), who has resigned from his position.

Fernando Alonso has been working with Airbus for many years and has a profound knowledge of the A400M as well as the other military aircraft programmes. Since 2007, Fernando Alonso has served as Head of Flight Test Operations at Airbus.

Further to the top management changes, the A400M programme will be restructured.
These organisational changes are designed to allow more efficient operations inside the Airbus Defence and Space Division and to put the A400M programme as well as its industrialisation in a position to best address currently existing shortfalls:
·         Responsibility for all industrial-related activities is being shifted to the Operations organisation, which is led by Pilar Albiac-Murillo.
·         Programme-related activities such as development and customer deliveries will remain in the scope of the Military Aircraft business unit, under the lead of Rafael Tentor, who serves as Head of the A400M programme.

“I expect that the new team will rapidly address existing shortfalls in the most efficient way”, said Bernhard Gerwert, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. “Every pilot who has flown the A400M to date praises the aircraft’s performance. It has even already been deployed in military operations and it will be a strategic asset to any of our customer nations’ Air Forces. But as for the integration of military capabilities and the industrial ramp-up in particular, we have not been performing at the level which had been expected from us. That is unacceptable and we will fix that. We are fully conscious of how dependent the customer nations are on this new airlifter and therefore take their concerns very seriously.  We will do our utmost to overcome them so the customers receive the aircraft they need in the shortest time possible.”

The current aircraft in service are showing good performance with the aircraft exceeding its specifications in its strategic, logistical role.

The military capabilities consisting of aerial delivery, cargo handling system, Defensive Aids Subsystems (DASS) and air-to-air refuelling with pods will be integrated in the second half of 2015, following certification and qualification for each capability.  Flight testing of these capabilities is continuing at a high pace. Additional military capabilities will be integrated gradually up till 2018 as contractually agreed.

We are continuing our intense and constructive discussion with OCCAR and the customer nations regarding the delivery schedule and will communicate on this once those have been concluded. With regard to any potential financial impact of the revised delivery schedule a review is currently underway as indicated in November and its results are expected to be communicated at the Group’s 2014 Annual Results Disclosure on 27 February 2015.

A growing sector
According to the latest report of the aerospace industry in Andalusia that each
year elaborates Hélice Cluster, in 2013 the turnover of the aeronautical industry
in Andalusia exceeded for the first time the barrier of 2,000 million Euros and
has generated more than 400 new jobs, reaching a total of 11,685 workers, a 3.5
% more than in 2012. In this growth had high profile international exports,
which reached 1,509 million Euros in 2013, 44% more than in 2012. Also in 2013,
the aerospace sector in Andalusia increased in two points its contribution to
GDP, which rose from 17% to 19 %. With regard to the auxiliary industry in
2013 increased productivity in a 7% with respect to 2012, the year in which it
had grown up to turn a 10% with respect to 2011.
The Andalusian aerospace sector, composed by 115 companies located
primarily in the provinces of Seville and Cadiz, “has experienced a great growth
in recent years, not only in the volume of business and employment, but also in
productivity, financial capacity, specialization, internationalization, investment
in R&D, diversification of the portfolio of costumers and exports,” says the new
President of Hélice. We have advanced in the way, thanks to the joint work

ourselves and look to the future with ambition. We have to keep increasing
specialization in the activities and sub-sectors of higher added value, improving
the levels of productivity and innovation, achieve greater operational
dimension, economic and technological, to improve the structure of the supply
chain, continue diversifying customers and markets and expand the activity
toward new business opportunities”, adds Rodriguez Grau, who assumes this
task from the presidency of Hélice “with enthusiasm and commitment”.

Pacific Coast Avionics completes Citation II avionics upgrade

January 28, 2015

Avionics upgrade gives Citation II operator LPV/LNAV/GPS approach capabilities
as well as active weather radar, traffic and ADS-B conformity.

Portland, OR, January 28, 2015  — Dewey Conroy, Vice President and COO of Pacific Coast Avionics has announced that the company recently completed another a touchscreen GPS/NAV/COM and digital weather radar upgrade on a Cessna Citation II business jet.

The Citation II is owned and operated by an extruded plastics products manufacturer with multiple U.S. locations.

“The aircraft’s legacy NAV/COM/DME, ADF, transponder and radar had been in the panel for 30-plus-years and they were not only becoming unreliable, but they lacked the capabilities that the owner needed to meet his growing business travel needs,” Conroy said. “The new Garmin touchscreen radios, ADS-B, active traffic and BendixKing vertical-profile radar give the pilots advanced operational and situational awareness capabilities at a true fraction of the cost of a newer aircraft.”

Conroy explained that the Citation II’s panel upgrade included:

• Dual Garmin GTN 750 touchscreen GPS/NAV/COMs

• Garmin GMA 35 Remote Audio Control System

• Garmin GDL 88D ADS-B Transceiver

• Garmin GTS 825 Air Traffic Surveillance and Collision Avoidance System

• BendixKing RDR 2000 Digital Vertical Profile Weather Radar

“This is the fourth Citation II we’ve upgraded with a similar system so the entire project was rather straightforward,” he explained. “It’s always a challenge integrating new digital technology in older aircraft systems. The biggest parts of the upgrade were fabricating the new wiring harnesses and interfaces along with the new panel center section to accommodate the Garmin GTN 750s.”
