Cessna Citation CJ3+ business jet gains Brazilian certification

May 21, 2015

WICHITA, Kan. (May 21, 2015) – Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, today announced certification by Brazil’s Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil of the Citation CJ3+, one of the newest models in Cessna’s stable of next-generation Citation business jets.

“The range, performance and economics of the Citation CJ3+ make it a natural fit for operations in Brazil, a country that has long been one of Cessna’s largest markets,” said Bob Gibbs, vice president, Sales. “The Citation CJ3+ represents the latest, proven technology in terms of avionics and cabin productivity and carries on the brand promise expected from the Cessna name.”

The range of the Citation CJ3+, at 3,778 kilometers (2,040 nautical miles), gives operators non-stop reach from São Paulo to Manaus or Santiago and from Manaus to Managua, Nicaragua. With a required take-off distance of only 969 meters (3,180 feet), the Citation CJ3+ has access to airports unavailable to larger competitor aircraft. Requiring only 27 minutes to climb direct to 13,716 meters (45,000 feet), it quickly gets above weather and other traffic.

The Citation CJ3+ gained initial certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in September, less than six months after its market introduction in March 2014. Cessna has introduced four new Citations into the market in the last 18 months, contributing to Cessna’s strong business jet delivery performance in 2014.

Volaris takes delivery of first two A321s

May 21, 2015

First airline in Mexico to operate Airbus’ largest single-aisle aircraft

Volaris, a Mexican low-cost carrier, has received its first two Airbus A321 aircraft, the latest being received during a ceremony at the Airbus Delivery Centre in Hamburg, Germany. Volaris’ aircraft will be the first A321s to operate in Mexico and will be deployed on the carrier’s domestic routes to and from Cancun.

The Volaris A321 seats 220 passengers, is equipped with Sharklet fuel-saving wing tip devices and powered by IAE engines. The two A321s will join Volaris’ existing all-Airbus fleet of more than 50 A319s and A320s aircraft. To date, Volaris has ordered a total of 74 Airbus single aisle aircraft.

The delivery highlights the market trend for larger capacity aircraft by Latin American operators as well as Mexico’s strong traffic growth. According to the most recent Airbus Global Market Forecast, the passenger aircraft fleet serving Mexico will more than double in the next 20 years.

“This is a very important step in our growth strategy, and the A321’s increased seating capacity will undoubtedly help Volaris address the increasing passenger demand for cost-efficient and comfortable air travel,” said Enrique Beltranena, Chief Executive Officer of Volaris. “It’s an honour to be reaching this milestone with Airbus, a key partner since our inception, who has played an important role in our growth as a company and the efficient operation of our aircraft.”

“The A321 is instrumental in bringing increased capacity on Volaris’ most popular routes, and it allows the airline to benefit from the lowest cost per seat of any single aisle aircraft,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We are pleased that the A321 will help Volaris efficiently address growing demand for cost-effective air travel in Mexico while benefitting from the unmatched comfort, operating economics and fuel-efficiency of the benchmark A320 Family.”

The A321 is the largest member of the best-selling single aisle A320 Family. The A321’s unbeatable economics offer a 20 percent capacity increase and an improved operating cost per seat compared to the A320. The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with almost 11,700 orders to date and over 6,500 aircraft delivered to 400 customers and operators worldwide.

The A320 Family is the preferred choice for Latin American carriers; there are over 500 A320 Family aircraft in operation and Airbus has more than 60 percent of fleet in-service and order backlog in Latin America today. With more than 950 aircraft sold and a backlog of nearly 500, almost 600 Airbus aircraft are in operation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In the last 10 years, Airbus has tripled its in-service fleet, while delivering more than 60 percent of all aircraft operating in the region.

Russian Helicopters presents series-produced and upcoming models at SITDEF 2015 in Peru

May 14, 2015

Lima, Peru / 14 May 2015

Russian Helicopters (part of State Corporation Rostec) is taking part in the V International defence technology and prevention of natural disasters exhibition SITDEF 2015, which will run from 14-17 May in Lima, Peru. Russian Helicopters will showcase its multirole Ka-32A11BC helicopter and one of its most anticipated upcoming models, the multirole Mi-171A2 for operators from the region. Jointly with Rosoboronexport, Russian Helicopters will also present its Ka-52 Alligator surveillance strike helicopter and the world’s largest helicopter, the Mi-26.

“Latin America is one of the most promising markets for Russian-made helicopters. In total, over 400 are currently in operation here. In 2013, contracts for the delivery of over 40 helicopters to this region were signed. Supplies will continue through to 2016,’ said Russian Helicopters CEO Alexander Mikheev. ‘We mainly supply helicopters in the medium and heavy segments to Latin American countries, which are the most economically successful and are a traditional area of strength for Russian Helicopters.”

Ka-32A11BC helicopters, with their coaxial main rotor design, are well known among Latin American operators. They are successfully deployed in fighting fires, in construction and assembly work, and to transport cargo on their external sling, in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Chile. The Ka-32A11BC boasts the best cargo capacity in its class and excellent manoeuvrability. In 2014, a service centre for the Ka-32A11BC was certified in Brazil. During SITDEF, Russian Helicopters specialists will give a presentation on this helicopter and discuss its capabilities in search and rescue and special cargo transport missions.

Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to learn more about the multirole Mi-171A2, which combines the unique global operational experience of Mi-8/17 helicopters with the latest engineering and technological solutions. Modern technologies and materials were used in its construction. Russian Helicopters launched flight tests on it in November 2014.

Jointly with Rosoboronexport, Russian Helicopters will showcase one of its best performing military models, the Ka-52 Alligator reconnaissance and combat  helicopter, which was unveiled to the world at the Le Bourget airshow in Paris in 2013. This helicopter is designed to destroy tanks, armoured and non-armoured ground targets, and enemy troops and helicopters both on the front line and in tactical reserves. It can also provide target acquisition and designation for helicopter teams and ground troop command and control centres. Its target acquisition system, avionics, and attack systems can all operate in any weather conditions, around the clock. The Ka-52 Alligator is ideally suited to operation in Latin America. It is excellently placed for use in high mountainous areas where it is a perfect fit in operations against guerillas and fighting narco-trafficking.

Rosoboronexport’s stand will also showcase the military Mi-26 and the upgraded version, the Mi-26T2 – the world’s largest series produced helicopter. It is used for complex transport and massive search and rescue operations. Talks will also be held with representatives of regional law enforcement agencies on the possible operation of Mi-35M and Mi-171Sh helicopters.

In November 2014, Russian Helicopters launched deliveries to Peru’s Defense Ministry of a new batch of Mi-171Sh military transport helicopters under a Rosoboronexport contract. In addition to these helicopters, the customer will receive equipment and parts for their maintenance, including equipment for a service and maintenance centre and also a training model for new flight crew. Under the contract concluded in December 2013, Peru will receive 24 helicopters by the end of 2015. This was the largest contract signed in the modern history of military-technical cooperation between Russia and Peru, and one of the most significant contracts signed on the global military helicopter market. Mi-171Sh helicopters support transport links with regions in the Amazon basin and the Andes, and will be useful during military operations along the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro rivers against drug trafficking, terrorist groupings, and organisations involved in illegal mining.

During the exhibition, Russian Helicopters specialists will meet with international partners and discuss issues relating to the comprehensive maintenance of Russian-made helicopters. Under license No. 2014214207, dated 30.09.2014, Russian Helicopters has the right to export spare parts, components, training goods, and technical documentation for previously exported helicopters, carry out work to extend their operational life, repair, and upgrade (including technical research and design and construction work), utilisation and other activities that form part of the comprehensive service provision for military helicopters, and also to train international specialists to carry out this work. Today, Russian Helicopters is actively involved in developing a network of after-sales service centres for commercial and military Russian-made helicopters in the region, in its efforts to deliver a first class service offering for Russian helicopters throughout their full life cycle.

The first International Defense Technology Exhibition & Prevention of Natural Disasters SITDEF event took place in 2007 in Peru’s capital Lima at the Headquarters of the Army, supported by the country’s President, Government and Defense Ministry. Every year the exhibition attracts over 40,000 visitors from across the continent of South America, and representatives of the Armed Forces and official delegations from 30 countries.

Blackhawk’s New PT6A-140 Engine Upgrade for the Cessna Caravan Nears Certification

May 14, 2015

May 21, 2015 – Geneva, Switzerland

Blackhawk Modifications announces that FAA Certification is imminent for a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-140 new engine upgrade for the Cessna 208 Caravan and 208B Grand Caravan. This is the same 867 horsepower engine currently used by Cessna on the Caravan EX.  Due to growing demand for extra horsepower from European Caravan operators, EASA certification will follow the FAA approval.  Available in June, 2015 in the USA, the factory new PT6A-140 upgrade offers an increase in available horsepower to 867, up from the 600 or 675 horsepower on Caravans equipped with PT6A-114 or PT6A-114A engines.  The result of this 28-44% increase in available horsepower will enable like-new levels of aircraft performance and load carrying capabilities.

Included with the Blackhawk XP upgrade is a newly developed 325 amp starter/generator, a higher capacity engine oil cooler and a 106” three blade Hartzell propeller that is currently used on the Caravan EX. These upgrades offer Caravans operating throughout Europe the performance capabilities needed to effectively complete high-demand mission profiles.  Operators will also benefit from lower engine starting and oil temperatures due to the higher-capacity starter/generator and oil cooler.

“Caravans are workhorses”, states Jim Allmon, Blackhawk’s President and CEO.  “Many commercial operators utilize short runways, carrying heavy loads in hot and high conditions.  Additionally, those Caravan owners who operate off water will enjoy the capability to get up on step faster, reducing stress on the airframe and allowing operations from smaller bodies of water. With the additional horsepower of our upgrade, operators get a whole new operating experience from their Caravan. This upgrade will instantly increase mission capability, resulting in increased profits with better safety margins not to mention the added benefit of a significant increase in speed. Operators will also be very pleased with the near plug and play, bolt on simplicity of the PT6A-140 engine and associated kit. The cowl, exhaust and engine mounts are all reused, which makes the Blackhawk XP140 upgrade the lowest priced new-engine upgrade available on the market.” Blackhawk is taking orders now for June/July deliveries.
