Russian Helicopters showcases new military models at Army-2015

June 16, 2015

Moscow / 16 June 2015

Russian Helicopters (part of State Corporation Rostec) is taking part in the international military technology forum Army-2015, which runs from 16 to 19 June in Kubinka, Moscow Region. Participants and visitors will have the opportunity to see Russian Helicopters’ military models, which are in service in the Russian Armed Forces, and also upcoming developments and export models.

“Russian Helicopters is keenly focused on the development of the domestic military industrial complex,” Russian Helicopters CEO Alexander Mikheev said. “In close collaboration with the Russian Ministry of Defence, we are developing new models of helicopters, which ensure our country’s defences. Russian Helicopters is successfully fulfilling the state defence order, equipping the Russian Armed Forces with new helicopters in strict accordance with the supply schedules set out.”

Visitors to Army-2015 will be able to see the shipborne Ka-52K, modernised Mi-28N(E) Night Hunter with dual controls, the Mi-8AMTSh-V, Mi-17V-5 and Ka-226T. New commercial helicopters, the Mi-171A2 and Mi-38 will also be showcased at the forum.

The Ka-52K is designed for the Russian Navy. It is developed on the basis of the Ka-52 Alligator reconnaissance and combat helicopter, boasts resilient anti-corrosion treatment, folding blades and wings in addition to other technical solutions vital in order to be shipborne. Its main on-board systems have been adapted for marine use. This new model is currently undergoing flight tests.

The Mi-8AMTSh-V is a new version of the Mi-8AMTSh military transport helicopter adopted by the Russian military. This modernised helicopter has upgraded flight capabilities, and under the import-substitution programme many of the internationally-sourced components have been replaced by new Russian-made alternatives, delivering improved capabilities and expanding its operational range.

The Arctic version of the military transport helicopter, the Mi-8AMTSh-VA, is being developed on the basis of the Mi-8AMTSh-V. This helicopter is highly autonomous. It is designed to operate in low temperatures and during polar night, and is fitted with the latest avionics specially adapted for operation in the Arctic. The Mi-8AMTSh-VA offers Arctic units of Russia’s Armed Forces significantly greater operational effectiveness, and will play a key role in implementing Arctic development programmes.

The Mi-28N(E) Night Hunter combat helicopter with dual controls is a modification of the helicopter designed for training military pilots. The Mi-28N(E) Night Hunter with dual controls can act as an attack helicopter.

The light multirole Ka-226T helicopter was developed on the basis of the Ka-226, which is also in service with the Russian Armed Forces and state special aviation divisions. The Ka-226T’s coaxial design affords it enhanced manoeuvrability, and means that it can land at small sites including in built up urban areas. The Ka-226T is equipped with the latest avionics, boasts low noise levels and meets current environmental standards. In March 2015 Russian helicopters received additional IAC AR type certificate for the multirole Ka-226T helicopter as a modification of the series-produced Ka-226.

The latest Mi-171A2 and Mi-38 helicopters are currently undergoing flight tests. These models are designed incorporating the latest technologies and solutions, and their entry onto the market will further reinforce Russian Helicopters’ position as one of the world’s leading helicopter designers and producers.

Army-2015 is organised by the Russian Defence Ministry. The event aims to create the necessary conditions for identifying promising technology, engineering, and other solutions, with a view to their subsequent incorporation in the production of weapons, military and specialised technology, and also the creation of a positive image of the Russian Armed Forces. Russian Helicopters’ extensive involvement in the forum is testimony to the degree of collaboration and level of importance placed on this cooperation with the Defence Ministry.

Cebu Pacific places an order for 16 ATR 72-600s

June 16, 2015

Cebu Pacific is the launch customer for the new High Density ATR ‘-600′ cabin.
This order includes options for 10 additional ATR72 -600s and is valued at US$ 673 million
Deliveries of the new aircraft will start in the third quarter of 2016

Le Bourget, 16 June 2015 – The Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific Air (PSE:CEB), ordered 16 ATR72 -600 from ATR, the European Turboprop aircraft manufacturer. At the Paris Air Show, Cebu Pacific and ATR announced that the deal includes options to acquire an additional 10 ATR72-600, valuing the total aircraft order at US$673 million, based on current list prices.

The order is part of Cebu Pacific’s fleet renewal program. Cebu Pacific currently operates a fleet of eight ATR 72-500 aircraft, which will be retired as the new aircraft enter service. The entry into service of the ATR 72-600 will see Cebu Pacific double its Turboprop fleet with new generation aircraft to meet growing demand in the Philippines for inter-island service.

ATR aircraft enjoy a high reputation not only for versatility but also for their ability to operate on short runways. This will allow Cebu Pacific to expand its operations not only on main airports but also to several other airports around the country, enabling Cebu Pacific to continue to play a leading role in the development of regional transport, tourism, and local economy in the Philippines.

The ATR 72-600 ordered by Cebu Pacific will be equipped, for the first time, with the high density Armonia cabin, the widest cabin in the turboprop market. It will be equipped with 78 slim-line seats and wider overhead bins with 30% more stowage space. These new technological innovations further enhance space and comfort for passengers.

About 330 ATRs – including more than 100 ATR 72-600s – are currently operated by 55 airlines in the Asia-Pacific region, where for many years now, are seen as the reference regional aircraft. The ATR 72-600 has the lowest seat per mile cost on the 70 seat segment, with significantly lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to similar class aircraft.

On their new order from ATR, Lance Y. Gokongwei, President and CEO of Cebu Pacific states: “We have been operating ATR aircraft since 2008, and they have enabled us to bring safe, reliable, and affordable air transport to smaller cities and islands throughout the Philippines. This order is an affirmation of our commitment to extend the convenience of affordable air travel to even more communities. We are very pleased to be the launch customer of this new configuration of the ATR 72-600, as this will allow us to offer our customers more seats at even lower fares.”

Patrick de Castelbajac, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, declares to be “very happy to continue our partnership with one of the leading airlines in South-East Asia and to contribute to the expansion of its network throughout the islands of the archipelago”. Cebu Pacific will also be able to benefit from the vast support network for ATR operators in Asia. When their first ATR 72-600 arrives, there will be five ATR pilot training centers in the region”.

China Eastern Airlines selects Rockwell Collins PAVES™ Broadcast IFE and Airshow® for 15 new 737 aircraft

June 16, 2015

PARIS (June 16, 2015) – Rockwell Collins’ PAVES™ Broadcast in-flight entertainment (IFE) and Airshow® 3D Moving Map systems will be featured on 15 new Next-Generation Boeing 737 aircraft on lease by China Eastern Airlines. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2015.

This is the latest in a series of selections by China Eastern for Rockwell Collins systems.  Earlier this year, the airline selected the company’s Head-up Guidance System and Multi-Mode Receiver for 20 new aircraft.

“We continue to strengthen our longstanding relationship with China Eastern and look forward to delivering our advanced systems for the flight deck and cabin,” said Jim Walker, vice president and general manager, International and Service Solutions, Asia Pacific for Rockwell Collins.

Rockwell Collins’ PAVES Broadcast overhead IFE significantly reduces size, weight, and power consumption compared to previous overhead system offerings. The system’s High Definition Media Server (HDMS) offers 160 gigabytes of solid-state digital audio and video storage capability, integrated pre-recorded announcements, and music (PRAM) functionality with embedded Airshow 3D Moving Map.

Rockwell Collins’ Airshow 3D Moving Map system includes NASA’s Blue Marble map data, based on actual satellite imagery, to provide a modernized view of real-time flight information to passengers. Extensive features and performance enhancements not only deliver unparalleled 3D graphical realism, but also add even more new capabilities to what is already the industry’s most popular moving map system.

Additionally, with PAVES Broadcast, airlines have the option to handle updates of non-encrypted content themselves or through the Rockwell Collins Content Services Group. This choice gives airlines flexibility in responding to commercial opportunities as they arise, since time-sensitive content can be replaced at a moment’s notice, anywhere in the world.

Dear readers:

June 16, 2015

The following story is about an Air Race that is taking place in a week.

In other words you will learn the outcome after reading the article. We all share the love of aviation. That is why I have chosen to tell you about it.

And then report the results.

HERE COME THE GIRLS

FLYING THE AIR RACE CLASSIC (ARC) in an annual event

Remember reading about the Powder Puff Derby of 1929? It was the first Women’s Air Derby; a transcontinental race as part of the National Air Races at Cleveland, entered by 20 women flyers who flew from Santa Monica, California to Cleveland, Ohio.

I became interested in the 2015 race when attending a meeting of Donors and Recipients at the Vaughn College where I serve as a Trustee and sponsor two Scholarships.

Margarita Cholakova, one of this year’s graduates of Vaughn caught my attention the second I spotted her at the school. I requested an interview at my office and my first impression when she crossed the threshold was her huge smile, which never disappeared during the delightful time we spent together. Thin, lithe, pretty and enthusiastic, she comes across as a young boy with her short hair, thin frame and a wild passion of aviation. It’s part of her aura of and was apparent enough to interest an alumnus of Vaughn who has sponsored Margarita and her teammate, Wendy Bonilla, covering all expenses, when he learned of her participation in this Air Race Classic (ARC).

Margarita’s interest in aviation began at 6 when she had her first taste of being aboard an airplane.

She was born in Bulgaria and came to the States in 2006 to visit her Mother, living here and Margarita never returned home. When she told me that she is the mother of a 20-year-old girl attending College in Boulder, Colorado, wow!, that was a surprise.

Vaughn appeared to be the perfect school to follow her passion and they came up with the Red Bird Flight Program in Texas, where she learned everything pursuant to this career. She had intensive training and she would fly with an instructor at least 3 times a day. When not flying, she was in a simulator.

Margarita likens herself to an alcoholic: She loves to work and she does each job with intensity, but always with that huge smile which must be part of her DNA.

She got her instrument rating and then her commercial license, and later she became a Flight instructor. Obviously, I am skipping so much of the hard work that came with each advancement.

Margarita stressed when telling her story how Doctor Sharon DeVivo, President of the Vaughn College, supported her all the way. Also, Emerson Allen, who had been a Captain for United Airlines, Flight Advisor and on staff at Vaughn and who accompanied the students to Texas to assist them with their training.

Margarita received her Flight Instructor license training at the Heritage Flight Academy at MacArthur Airport in Long Island.

One day she found a brochure in her mailbox with an invitation to become a part of the “Air Race Classics”. She talked to Debra Hanterbury and got the “thumbs up”, but one of the requirements was to be a student. She mentioned the idea to Wendy Bonilla, also studying at Vaughn, who had also been training at the Red Bird Training Center. They had been roommates for a while in Texas and became friends. She agreed to join the team.

The next hurdle…they needed an airplane! Dr. DeVivo was consulted. She felt it was a good venture and good for Vaughn. Like magic, a Cessna 172 was loaned to the girls.

Well, dear readers; you now have a good idea of the trip to be taken by 56 teams (all women) from all over the country who leave Fredericksburg, West Virginia on June 22 and end in Fairhope, Alabama on June 25.

Margarita says, “we are definitely aiming to win. I pray for this and if that happens, it will be a contribution to Vaughn. In my country there is this saying,” “If I win, we all win; if I lose, it is just me who loses”.

GO MARGARITA, GO WENDY!
