MIAMI, April 7 /PRNewswire/ — Today LAN initiated the process of incorporating advanced technology devices, called winglets, in all of its Boeing 767-300 long range aircraft. An important part of the company’s fleet renovation plan, winglets create efficiencies and underscore the commitment to the environment. Winglets are placed on the wings of an aircraft facilitating a more efficient use of fuel. The reduction in usage equals approximately 450,000 tons of fuel per year which means about a 5% decrease in CO2 emissions for every aircraft.

The winglets measure over 11 feet in length and are located at the ends of the wings. They are designed using the latest technology available that optimizes the aerodynamics of the aircraft and thereby, reduces fuel consumption.

LAN is investing close to US$70 million to incorporate this cutting-edge technology that is already being used by some of the world’s most recognizable airlines on the myriad of aircraft that comprise their respective fleet. These airlines include American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines and Qantas, among others.

Recently, LAN operated its first commercial flight in Latin America on a Boeing 767-300 equipped with the modern winglets. The route served was Santiago, Chile to Ezeiza in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The installation of the winglets on LAN’s entire fleet of long range Boeing 767-300, 37 passenger and cargo aircraft, will be completed at the end of next year. During this process LAN will have secured all of the certificates and licenses needed from every aeronautic authority.

“We are incorporating the most modern technology available in the industry to create the most efficient operational systems that significantly contribute to the preservation of the environment. This initiative is an important step in the aircraft renovation process that has allowed LAN to operate one of the most modern fleet in the world,” stated Enrique Elsaca, Senior Vice President, Operations.
