Is the headline in a Friday Latin Business Chronicle article by Joachim Bamrud, which starts out with the following quote from the interview with Panama’s “model airline” CEO, Pedro Heilbron: “Our outlook for 2009 is cautiously optimistic, like all carriers we are seeing challenges in demand, but we are well-positioned and prepared”. The article is an in depth look at the “model airline” group with its Colombian subsidiary Aero Republica, which is modernizing its fleet with ERJ-190 aircraft and replacing existing MD-80s. It will have one of the youngest fleets in the world according to Pedro Heilbron. Copa last year set a new record in revenues, which grew by 25.5% to $1.3 billion. Net income was $152.2 million with a 17.4 operating margin, among the best in the world. Citibank expects Copa to boost its net income this year by 6.6% to $162 million despite a 6.3% fall in revenues to $1.21 billion.
