Bombardier Aerospace Selects Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PW307B Engine to Power its All-Composite Learjet 85 Aircraft

WICHITA, KANSAS–(Marketwire – May 12, 2008) – Bombardier Aerospace today announced its all-composite Learjet 85 aircraft – the next generation in Learjet excellence – will be powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PW307B engines. The Learjet manufacturer also announced it selected Innovative Power Solutions’ (IPS) advanced DC Brushless Starter/Generator (BS/G) System as the engine starter solution for the new midsize jet.

At 6,100 pounds of take-off thrust, the PW307B engine incorporates a suite of advanced technologies, including a TALON(TM) low-emissions combustor, an advanced shock-management fan for increased flow capacity, and powdered-metal, high-pressure turbine disks for improved efficiency. The result is superior performance, better fuel consumption and improved operating economics, together with Pratt & Whitney Canada’s trademark dependability.

Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PW307B turbofan engine offers the least environmental impact of any engine in its class with a reduction in nitrous oxide emissions that betters International Civil Aviation Organization standards by over 30 per cent. The PW307B also meets Zurich 5 emission requirements for no landing fee surcharges.

Advanced Brushless Starter/Generator system incorporates cutting edge technology IPS’ state-of-the-art 500 Amp, 18KW DC Brushless Starter/Generator Systems will be used on both the Learjet 85 aircraft ‘s PW307B engines and the APU. The system has undergone comprehensive evaluations at P&WC on the PW307B engine, demonstrating superior engine start performance under various environmental and input power conditions.

The IPS BS/G System combines both start and power generation functions, thus eliminating traditional air turbine or other dedicated engine start systems, resulting in significant benefits.

The new Learjet 85 set to redefine the midsize business jet class

Launched on October 30, 2007 the new Learjet 85 aircraft will be the first Bombardier Aerospace jet to feature an all-composite structure and will be the first all-composite structure business jet designed for type certification under U.S. Federal Aviation Administration FAR Part 25.

An extraordinary advancement in next generation flight, the Learjet 85 aircraft’s all-composite structure will allow Learjet designers to maximize cabin comfort while minimizing drag and improving performance. The clean-sheet Learjet aircraft targets a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.82 and a transcontinental range of up to 3,000 nautical miles (5,556 km)(i).
