Pratt & Whitney Power Systems Delivers 400th FT8(R) Engine as Fleet Surpasses 3 Million Operating Hours

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Pratt & Whitney Power Systems has achieved two new major milestones: delivering its 400th FT8(R) engine to TECO Energy and surpassing 3 million FT8 engine fleet hours of operation worldwide. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.

Based in Tampa Bay, Fla., TECO Energy’s Tampa Electric Company has been a Pratt & Whitney customer since 2007 and serves more than 667,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. The 400th FT8 engine delivery is among five SWIFTPAC(R) power plants purchased by the company and is designed with all the advantages of aeroderivative technology, including higher efficiency, easy system start-up, enhanced peak load and operating capabilities, and reduced maintenance and installation costs.

“The first FT8 gas turbine was installed in June 1991 and since then the product has been put into service with more than 100 customers in 40 countries,” said Peter Christman, president, Pratt & Whitney Power Systems. “Our 400th delivery signifies our commitment to expanding Power Systems’ market leadership in peak power.”

In addition, Pratt & Whitney Power Systems’ FT8 industrial gas turbine fleet surpassed 3 million operating hours while achieving a fleet reliability level greater than 98 percent. The FT8 engine is a derivative of Pratt & Whitney’s JT8D, one of the most widely used jet engines in aviation history with more than 14,500 produced.
