The Wings Club to Honor Wolfgang Mayrhuber With the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award

NEW YORK, May 19 /PRNewswire/ — The Wings Club, recognized as the premier aviation club in the world, will honor Mr. Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, with the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award. Acknowledging outstanding accomplishments in the field of aviation, The Wings Club will present the Award on October 23, 2009 at its 67th Annual Dinner to be held at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in New York City. The Lufthansa Group is a leading international airline business comprised of more than 400 subsidiaries and affiliates and known for its modern fleet and extensive global route network, which it operates jointly with its Star Alliance partners.
Mr. Mayrhuber boasts more than 35 years of service with Lufthansa. He joined the company on February 1, 1970, as an engineer at the engine overhaul facility in Hamburg. After holding a variety of management posts in the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) division, he was appointed Executive Vice President and COO Technical at Lufthansa on November 1, 1992. In the early nineties, he led the rehabilitation team charged with engineering Lufthansa’s recovery and was subsequently elected Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik AG when it became an independent company in 1994. After six successful years in that position, he was appointed to the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG on January 1, 2001 with responsibility for the passenger airline business. On April 1, 2002, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and proceeded to take up the position of Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG on June 18, 2003.
In addition to his executive responsibilities at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Mr. Mayrhuber holds a seat on various supervisory boards, including Fraport AG, Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG, Munich Re Group (Munchener Ruckversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG) and BMW Group. Internationally, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Swiss International Air lines Ltd. and HEICO Corp. (Florida, USA). He has also been appointed to the Steering Committee of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) and serves as both Chairman of the Strategy and Policy Committee (SPC) and a member of the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Born in Waizenkirchen, Austria, on March 22, 1947, Mr. Mayrhuber studied mechanical engineering at the Technical College in Steyr, Austria, and at the Bloor Institute in Canada. In autumn of 1990, he completed an Executive Management Training course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
The Wings Club’s Distinguished Achievement Award has been presented annually since 1975. Past recipients include Astronaut Neil Armstrong, Senator John Glenn, former President George H. W. Bush, Brigadier General Charles E. Yeager, Steven Udvar-Hazy as well as 12 present and former airline CEO’s including Fred Smith, Bob Crandall, Herb Kelleher, Gordon Bethune, Sir Colin Marshall, and Sir Richard Branson.
