AIAA President Dave Thompson commented,“Randy Babbitt’s years as a commercial airline pilot, his past leadership of the Air Line Pilots Association, International, and his years as an aviation consultant, have given him the knowledge necessary to be an outstanding FAA Administrator—he understands, first hand, the critical issues which face the American commercial aviation sector, and is well positioned to lead the FAA as it carries out initiatives such as establishing the next generation of air traffic control technology, continually striving to advance the quality of air safety for all pilots, passengers, and crew, while working with the aerospace industry to produce more fuel-efficient, ‘green’ technology. The Institute looks forward to Babbitt’s leadership.”
Babbitt has been involved in aviation policymaking for several years. Beginning his career as a commercial airline pilot for Eastern Air Lines, he is a former president of the Air Line Pilots Association, International, the world’s largest pilot union, and is the founder and former president of Eclat Consulting, which provides strategic, analytical, and financial expertise for regulatory, legislative, and business initiatives in aviation. Babbitt most recently was a partner in the aviation practice of the international management consulting firm Oliver Wyman. He has also served on several governmental panels studying the ways in which air safety can be advanced.
Babbitt becomes the FAA’s 16thadministrator.
AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace profession. With more than 35,000 individual members worldwide, and 90 corporate members, AIAA brings together industry, academia, and government to advance engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense.
