Meeting in Brasilia last week, the presidents of the 12 countries in South America approved the constitution of the Union of South American countries called UNASUR. President Michelle Bachelet has been named to head the organization until the next meeting of the union in Chile in 2009. The 12 countries which have endorsed the constitution include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela. President Bachelet stated during the presentation that the Union has to focus on social political goals to reduce poverty throughout the region. Lula of Brazil, who hosted the meeting said: “The constitution of UNASUR must comply with the wishes of the governments in the region that are seeking unity. This is a dream of integration which was held by our predecessors centuries ago.” Congratulations to all of the 12 countries, a really great decision and one which we have been hoping to see for a long time. Just a thought: how about an Open Skies agreement within the region to promote continental tourism and the economy?
