DUBAI – November 16, 2009 – GE Aviation and Emirates have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will enhance Emirates’ repair and testing capabilities on GE90 engines.

Emirates agrees to perform engine module and piece-part breakdown on GE90-115B engines in the region along with GE90-115B engine testing at its Engine Test Facility, located on Academic City Road in the Lehbab Area, about 30 km from Dubai International Airport. GE Aviation will work with Emirates to ensure it has the necessary material and manpower support to meet the region’s growing demand.

“GE and Emirates developed a strong relationship as we worked together on the design and construction of the outstanding state-of-the-art Emirates Engine Test facility that opened in 2007,” said Muhammad Al-Lamadani, Senior Executive Sales for GE Aviation for Middle East, Eastern Europe, and CIS. “This MOU further demonstrates our continuing commitment to Emirates and the Middle East region.”

The Emirates’ state-of-the-art combined turbo-fan engine and APU preparation and functional test facility is the largest in the Middle East and one of 12 facilities around the globe. The 6,000 sq. meter Engine Test Facility is located on a 24,000 sq. meter plot and consists of two sections: Test Cell and Engine Preparation Area and offices. With a 13-meter cross-section test cell chamber, the facility is capable of testing a variety of aircraft engines up to 150,000 pounds of thrust. The Engine Preparation Area includes a large space dedicated to six universal engine preparation workstations with a sophisticated 30-ton capacity engine handling system, interconnecting monorail, bridge crane and turntable that links the preparation areas with the turbofan test cell for a smooth transition from prep to test.

The test facility can test a large variety of turbofan engines and auxiliary power units, such as the GE90-115B and the Engine Alliance* GP7200 engines. So far this year, Emirates has tested 10 GE90-115B engines at its test facility.

Emirates is the world’s largest operator of GE90 engines with 60 GE90-powered Boeing 777 aircraft in service and an additional 25 on order. The airline will be the largest Airbus A380 aircraft and Engine Alliance GP7200 operator with 58 A380s on order, 5 of which are already in service, and more than 230 GP7200 engines.

GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), is a world-leading provider of jet engines, components and integrated systems for commercial and military aircraft. GE Aviation has a global service network to support these offerings.
