First FAA-certified fuel tank inerting system significantly reduces fuel
tank flammability, increases commercial aircraft safety
PHOENIX, July 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Honeywell (NYSE: HON)
announced today it has delivered the Nitrogen Generation System (NGS) for
the Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. The NGS delivers nitrogen enriched
air to the aircraft center fuel tank, significantly reducing flammability
and increasing commercial aircraft safety. On July 16, 2008, the Department
of Transportation, National Transportation Safety Board, and Federal
Aviation Administration jointly announced that within two years, all new
aircraft must include technology designed to reduce the risk of center fuel
tank fires.
The Honeywell NGS is the first fully FAA-certified fuel tank inerting
solution for commercial transport aircraft. Honeywell is developing
additional systems for the Boeing 737-300/400/500, 777-200/300, 747-400,
and the 747-8 aircraft.
“Honeywell’s Nitrogen Generation System is based on more than 50 years
of experience in the development of systems and equipment for aircraft
environmental control,” said Garrett Mikita, President of Honeywell’s Air
Transport and Regional business. “This system continues to extend
Honeywell’s heritage of providing state-of-the-art solutions to increase
aircraft safety.”
Using advanced thermal management and gas separation technologies, the
NGS substantially reduces aircraft center fuel tank flammability by
introducing nitrogen-enriched air to lower the oxygen concentration. The
National Transportation Safety Board has stated that the combination of
ignition source prevention and flammability reduction is the most effective
means to prevent fuel tank explosions. The safety of aircraft currently
in-service can also be enhanced with the addition of the Honeywell NGS.
